We're happy to stay in when the weather is this bad. Our main A road was closed earlier, as was part of the M4 locally.

We have plenty of stuff in so its not at all essential that we go out. CTC, just thinking that when roads are bad having an Asda on your doorstep may have some benefits ;)

So spent much of day ignoring Crimbo and busy on the computer researching stuff. Picked up one silver plate bowl that we'd put in a prob reject pile to find its 218g of 800 silver...so that was nice :). Its good to have stuff to do when the weather's awful, stops you moping and moaning :D

Now Itsme, what era do you think this is? Dovetail joints but not oustanding carpentry
  • Your link didn't work, Dave. but I've been watching the local rivers on the webcam site which I presume you meant. None of them look great. Have to say I wouldn't be sleeping soundly if I lived next to any of them.

Glad you made it to B. (:rotfl: No, actually, you have my sympathies for having to go there but you know what I mean)
At one stage they were sending people via Blackmoor Gate to get to the Ilfracombe side of Braunton. Even that is getting harder since Brayford & Combe Martin are flooded. The only way over from this side seems to be 'across the top' behind Ilfracombe.
It hasn't stopped raining &, in fact, is building steadily back up in both rain & wind. :(

Who asked if we could have another year like this? ........ Unfortunately, we can (&, here, we have had)
Carp weather for last 5 years.

It looks like my grandmother's era so from late 19th into early 20th century - Victorian into Edwardian. Has the mirror been replaced? The patina looks different in the photo.

Thanks Itsme, not sure about mirror, possibly replaced as the beading around is fragmented and it show no sign of age, but beading does match the drawer fronts. I know so little about furniture I'm really not sure why I bought it :o

:rotfl: I wouldn't take much notice of me.
As you'll have seen my house is a matter of heirloom or bespoke. I was just going on instinct.
    Alfie would know better.

It was just a webcam picture grab, but they seem to disappear after a while, so I've removed it. I lost my connection right after posting it.

Basically, it showed the water higher at Umberleigh today than it was last time. No arches visible on the bridge at all. :(

"A377 Devon - A377 in Chulmleigh closed in both directions between the B3096 Leigh Road junction and the B3042 junction, because of flooding."

I have friends in Mountain Rescue who tell me a call has gone out countrywide for assistance in the SW.

Ilfracombe is, apparently, cut off. Not before time ;)

:rotfl:That was DW's alternative route home if my cunning plan failed.... The way chosen involved a 1:4 with a stream running down it and two obtuse bends, but the youngsters & I walked down first to check there wasn't a nasty surprise at the bottom!

We felt we should get out there and do all the basics just in case, but we didn't really find the sort of bird we wanted in the time available.:( If conditions had been normal, we'd have headed for the Big Sheep, where there are often deals to be done on their last Farmers' Market day.;)

We knew from the radio that Crediton, Tiverton and Okehampton were all off the menu. South Molton Saturday Market looked dodgy too, with suppliers maybe not risking it to go there.

It's a disaster for small businesses.:(:( I feel bad for just looking after No1, but the bird came from a local source & butcher, just not one I'd normally have chosen. :o
  • Have you got everything in now, Dave?
There's not much anyone can sensibly do unless they are in the immediate area of a flood or are part of a trained response team. If they're not careful people end up just becoming someone else to rescue. :( The best thing is just to sit tight.
There's another 30mm of rain expected before high tide comes around 1am-ish.

It's definitely going to be a miserable Christmas for many people in different places around the UK this year.
