Sorry to hear of your Mum's illness Maggie. Best to get things sorted out - ie Power Of Atorney's etc. The charities ie Alzheimer's Scotland are really helpful .....if you google you'll find a localish office for one of the Dementia helplines.

Dave can you build all over the flat roof -save on the founds & improve the look of the house.

Thanks Choille, the old style Enduring Power of Attorney is done and she's asked for it to be used, but with the way things have been changing so fast there hasn't been time to try and sort it out. I know it'll be difficult to use, but it is still legal and I've warned OH about all the stuff I've seen here on MSE forums about the banks being difficult.

Gotta go as tea is arriving - tinned steak and kidney pie with baked beans, we're too knackered to manage a proper cooked meal!

We've been in touch with Age UK.

OH just told me that they now have decided she has UTI so on antibiotics, just hope that is the source of her being so out of things.

It does knock people really confused. It affects their memory, concentration etc.

It is a very difficult time for you all.

Really cold here & damp. I think that we are to have more snow tomorrow.
Water was frozen yesterday for a while - forgot about that. We had that for weeks the other Winters. It's a pain.

when i win the lottery i am going to dedicate my life [whats left :D] to finding the answer to the mountain of washing that finds its way to my kitchen resmbeling the ALPS in the process... with all the technology available why is there not an inbuilt shute in each room that you can pop the days clobber into, it sorts itself ,washes/dries and then comes back to the room via a lift...:D:D:D

im on my 3rd machine wash and contemplating ME being no.4. :rotfl::rotfl:

The flat roof is about 4' wide and 20' long, so it might be a kinda thin upstairs room! It was formed when the last folk made the kitchen 3' wider, but they wrecked the external appearance of the property by doing it the cheapest way.

About half the stuff proposed is simply undoing what was done around 6 -10 years ago. It's a shocking waste, but we knew we'd be doing these jobs if we decided to stay. If one owns an old, period property, almost anything is excusable, but when it's a modernish place, things like having two long, unnecessary corridors just grates, especially when the bedrooms are on the poky side.

And we really don't need 7 ways to leave the building! :rotfl:

(Reminds me of a song ;))

I need to confess that if I would do one thing differently in all of this, it would be what you all advised and live in the property first :o

We don't really have any of the design faux pas you seem to be dealing with, Dave. Essentially, there's nothing wrong with this house. I don't really know why I was so possessed this time last year. I just think I wasn't thinking straight with the twins and lack of sleep and the general derangement that came with having them..... And we were so preopccupied about catering for the 'Rents, them being poorly etc....

Now we are down this route, architect commissioned, planning application in, so long as money permits, we will get the work done and I have to say it will be a fabulous family home. With hindsight, we'd just do all the energy saving measures that would also improve the cosmetic appearance (underfloor heating, external insulation/cladding, aluminium DG) and live with what we've got. Old Tommy, bless him, he built a great house in an amazing spot. We are very lucky peeps to be in this position :p

Well....the awful conservatory thing was actually the result of them consulting with planning. At the time, some planning officers from NZ were here on secondment and they had some odd ideas. (I remember talking with one myself about a property in Cornwall, so perhaps they were in more than one area.)

Anyway, this NZ planning chappie said that the conservatory should reflect the rural and business nature of the property related to its ag-tie. So, the building was duly constructed from rendered breeze blocks and rough cut timber, rather than purpose-made items. According to one of the people who wqorked on it, it leaked from Day One.

It leaks a lot more now! :rotfl:
