SO.... if a "profesional" gardener puts NEW woodchippings down around NEW plants on a NEW big bed and all the plants are weedy looking or non existant now...that would explain it ????
i cant believe these guys charge top wack for thier "services"...[at friends place]
i dont like the man, he doesnt like me....
i sneek out and dead head the roses...something he never does ?? :rotfl::rotfl:
Interesting point. Dead wood, leaves etc on the surface will eventually break down, as in woodland. If dug in it will deplete nitrogen from the soil while decomposing, but if used as a surface mulch I didnt think the effect on the underlying plant roots would be material. I'm ready to be corrected though.......ooooerrr Missus!0 -

I think it's OK if it stays on the surface, or if there's something like a membrane or cardboard between the woodchip and the soil, even better....
....but I wouldn't be too quick to dig it in!0 -

Not necessarily. It depends on what's happening under the mulch and how good the soil preparation was. That could be more important.
For example, when our school built a new garden the Head was sold a load of rubbish for topsoil. This was not apparent because the whole area was mulched in bark chippings. A year or so on and many plants had died, asphyxiated by being buried in heavy clay, which compacted, despite being under the mulch.
All the same, there must be a lot of tannins and stuff in new bark and that will leach into the soil too. I know when I used to make my own compost, I had to buy composted bark. It was hard to get hold of because of the time in the composting process.0 -
Well, to give an idea of break down....
Our woodchip ends up on muck heap, but only one end of it. No weeds a tha end while the res of the heap looks like a wtland wildweed habitat.
I actually have reeds or bulrushes or something growing in there and three sets of coots have been raised there this year.0 -
well, lots of things like lupins have all but disapeared... the chippings are like large slices and im sure it was fresh pine cos the firs were taken down, chipped and stacked but he used them soon after.[dont know where else they could have gone] the beds look very grey and dry. the soil underneath WAS lawn and just de turfed then dug over...lightly !
hes not what youde call "energetic"...0 -
Anyway Alf, what kind of adventure?
Famous Five?
Jewel of the Nile?
You can tell me, no one else is listening
Had a nightmare morning trying to ship some china, language difficulties and an imminent UK departure causing mayhem on one shipment that now needed urgent, express and higher cost delivery. Think its now sorted *fingers crossed* .
(On another matter my 3 experiences of Cargo2 (Sekaimon, fronting for the Japanese buyers) have been wholly positive, so if they bid on your stuff dont worry. There is a Russian equivalent which is genuine but less well organised).
But once again stock is a concern after a goodish sales week, just £150 of stock left which is ludicrously low:eek:
And after getting an e-mail yesterday saying my hotel booking was off, got a phone call last night saying room was available again. So trip nx week back on :T0 -
