In other news, we saw the architect today and had a go at sorting out a potential Plan B for the bungalow. It's not as radical as the "going upwards" design, but it may enable us to improve the bedrooms by way of compensation.

The previous owners spent thousands of £ making alterations during their 10 year tenure. Now, it seems, we shall be spending 3x as much to get rid of everything they did! :rotfl:

I wonder if it's an internal parasite thing, but it was so sudden today - maybe eaten something a bit off? Goodness knows. She looks so well - red comb, feathers all shiny & was perfectly perky earlier on today....

I hate his bit of animal keeping - when you're stumped & they look so poorly.

Me too. With Mrs Chatty we noticed that she would drink the 'orrible water inside the tyres we have as perches and windbreaks within the enclosure, which is why I drilled them out.

:rotfl::rotfl: my friend bought her house from an elderly DIY'r who proudly showed off his achievements.... we immediately started to pull up carpets etc and took off some really horrid plasticy internal doors. then we noticed the kitchen units were all wonky so we took them out,and various c*ckups like skirtings/door frames in 10 odment pieces painted/filled over BUT under the cover of darkness cos the old boy had moved just over the road... it was hillarious as half his house disapeared to the dump but we didnt want to upset him...we look like burglars..:rotfl::rotfl:

Nope, these tyres have been here years. They were used for planting and, believe it or not, for part of the flooring in the goat sheds! There's no oil or anything like that in the chicken pen.

The only oil that goes into the chicken pen is in the lawnmower, which has its problems, but leaking isn't one of them.

Unfortunately, this is structural stuff, like corridors (block built) and a hideous flat roof. We'll gain 100 square feet just getting rid of useless corridors.

Then there's the steel beam that's 3' too short, so piers were constructed......wrecking the kitchen space. I think they built everything to fit the beam they already had! It's gotta go....

The conservatory is only about 6 or 7 years old. It's built like the Titanic, but from rough cut timber, and the pitch is too shallow. Someone involved in building it told me the shortcomings in the design were obvious from the outset. Apparently it's never been watertight....That goes, but I might get a greenhouse out of it.

There's more, but that will do for now...;)

Dave, would it be cheaper and possible to knock down and replace with a timber house ...like those cabins with upstairs etc?

It wouldn't be cheaper, ethical or better IMO.

This is a conventional & soundly-built bungalow, fit to stand for another hundred or two years, but it's been messed-about to suit the needs and tastes of people who thought it was a forever home. Our task is to undo what they did and arrive at something logically laid-out and inoffensive to behold.

It sounds straightforward, but bungalows come with particular issues which don't affect two storey structures so much, mainly to do with height at the eaves and the availability of light if they're extended in certain ways.

Normally, DW and I can walk into a place and see the various possibilities quite quickly. Here, we went, "Err....we'll come back to that later...." So here we are!:rotfl:

I'm back! Although I'm still so busy I'm multi-tasking whilst typing this (trying to sort out car insurance from my parents..)

Totally unplanned, we've been in Sheffield all Summer doing repairs on the rental properties. A combination of routine maintenance being brought forward (large paint job on the 3 storey property for which the weather was amazingly dry) and unexpected maintenance as a result of the terrible wet weather prior to our visit (wooden floors expanding and popping up all over the place, internal painting jobs here there and everywhere... Ach! It's been a right royal pain) But we're back and glad to be so.

We're still no nearer getting our planning permission, although I think we've finalized the plans.

Does anyone have any gems of wisdom about externals? We've got a 12 x 20 polytunnel on the South ish facing field, plus a garage to the North side and animal houising and a workshop to the North east.

Gotta go and walk the plans through before we give the final go ahead to the architect,

I'm hoping to get the chance to read what's been going on with you all. I've missed you :)
