CTC, maybe the difference is that you've still got your own place, and your business, so its not yet a case of being totally committed. I'd bet if you were there full time, you'd be feeling different and getting loads of buzz from making improvements, never mind getting your first pigs. Insulated yurt in the garden while the house is fixed instead of a caravan?
Lotus eater, no blight on my spuds. Mind, they came in a pack from Lidl so that doesnt count! Had our wine and BBQ day yesterday with GS2's naming, sitting out till late in the evening sun, lovely!0 -
hiya,
im a tad poorly today...got stonking headache and feeling icky
BUT its been the most amazing sunny hot day so shouldnt complain....:)
dropped friend at car boot, did an airport run, fetched animog feeds, went to food/wine fest up road this afternoon ,got back 6.30,fed animogs, bath cooked dinner ..................now im pooped...:p
CTC........i shouldnt laugh but any "grass " you put down for pigs will leave you despairing when they demolish it and unless you get "mabels" you will never see another green item grow under thier fat little butts ever again ....:rotfl::rotfl:0 -

I think its for me really as i feel soooooooooo guilty as the ground had to be totally cleaned off...so there wasnt even one weed in there, ok there are some trees, with roots etc, but nothing green.. due to the crap that had been dumped or just left from the old chicken shed ( the next patch to be done is going to be the worst one for clearing... as major rubbish and rotten shed floors on breeze blocks and lots more of the dreaded aspestos sheets that are laying on the old floor).
so its 'token greenary':D plus i am hoping in the 4 weeks that weeds will grow too, so at least they will have something to much on for the first hour...lol
Managed to harvest some grass seeds.. so i will just scatter them too...
Didnt manage to do any new listings today:cool: but in my defense i did have 2 different people lookinh/buying some of my vintage collection... so sold some 1940's early 50's clothes.. also about 10 cc41 dresses and coats which were in excellent condition... I know i could have wacked them on fleabay, and got more money, BUT as a job lot i did get a good price;)
Rhiwie going to have a look at yurts now:D
We have a business idea for the land/pigs etc... which hubby mentioned to a few of our biker friends.. and it looks as though they think its a fab idea, and could potentially be very good customers....so will do some trial runs next year..Work to live= not live to work0 -
I cut all the grass today too.....well, not the big orchard, but everything else. I had to do it with the little Mountfield because the big mower went on the blink.
I found out what was wrong with the big one. It's a pulley that's out of alignment, which is wearing the belt prematurely. It looks as if someone has run into a kerb with it, possibly trying to use that 4th gear that I haven't dared use. Anyway, Pete says he has the technology to fix it, if I get the deck off........
Lump hammer?
Good you could all sit out for the Do, rhiwfield. I think half the nation had a BBQ this weekend!0 -
Does anyone know how long this lovely thing called 'sun' is going to last?
Really looking forward to the Bulldog this year.... Last year was good, but I was REALLY sensible:eek::cool::rotfl: and i got a funny feeling i an going to be the same this year:eek: does that mean I am growing up?:rotfl:
When we are back from the Bash, and we got the pigs, we will be staying over in the caravan alot more... now that rocky has gone, our main commitment has gone, ok we do have the poultry, but they didnt have to be let out 3 or 4 times in the night:o and the cat we are keeping in when the construction people are working on the supermarket, but eventually she will be kept in ALL the time.... dont want anything happening to her..
I think its that time again to put the kettle on:DWork to live= not live to work0 -

Good till Friday, then.....
UK Outlook for Friday 27 Jul 2012 to Sunday 5 Aug 2012:
Rain or showers and gusty winds are likely across northern parts of Britain on Friday and Saturday. Further south , it should start mainly fair, but there is a chance of some heavy showers moving north from France during Friday and Saturday. At the beginning of the next week, temperatures across the south should be much cooler and there will be some rain and showers around, heavy at times particularly in the north and east. For the rest of the week, a north-south split looks most likely with the best of the drier and brighter weather in the south. As the Olympics draw closer the Met Office will have local forecasts so that everyone can make the most of the Games experience.0 -
When. I checked weather yesterday, thursday looked rainy here, but till then fine, and friday good.0

do i need to do anything re the bees in my window sill ? not that i can get to them BUT will they survive ? will they move on/sort em selves out/ split the colony....im clueless...:o

The thing that really kills bees is damp. If they are being part heated by your house they will be OK provided the rain does not blow in under the tiles.
However, I think you need to have plans for later this year or next year. Unless you have spotted them coming in via one particular tile?
They will almost certainly swarm at sometime. What they do is "pitch up" on a bush/tree/fence etc near their hive. Some time after this, they will decide to move to a new hive/ hole in a tree, hole in a house. You need to intercept them before they fly off and re-house them. if you do not want them, then ring the bee keeper's helpline and someone will take them away.
If you want them you need to take the swarm and house them. That means some sort of suit - overall with a zip worn with wellies covers most things. So you need a bee hood and rubber gloves to top it off. The swarm last Wednesday was so easy; held the box underneath, tapped the pear branch hard and 95% fell straight in. Lowered the box, turned it on its side and then upside down. Lifted one corner so strays could get in and tapped the branch again. 5 minute job.
If you can persuade your unfortunate neighbour to sell you the posh hive for a pittance............;). If not think about Warre hives as they are DIY, have a reputation for raising sound colonies but are not good in urban/ allotment situations.
All you do on the day, is make a space in the hive, wait until dusk, lift the upturned box onto a cloth, carry to the hive, place over, remove the cloth and tap smartly until all the bees fall in the hive. Replace any frames or top-bars and close up.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

:j:j many thanks RAS...... clear concise instructions.:D can you teach my BF to answer me like that please...he can go twice round the gasworks and have a fistfull of technical words per sentence !! :rotfl::rotfl:
Q1....time of year they are likely to do this flit ?
Q2.... is there an ideal venue for a hive ? they are about 12ft up at the mo,and tend to go in 2 tile holes but both lead to the canopy under my window
they are in the white bit under the window...
below is a high hedged area so not sure suitable...do/will they need a "flight path" clearance area ? if so i need to find a suitable area for a hive.... quickly and get the gear to catch/move em...
p.s. do you ever visit the NF ??;) :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Scorchio here today, so we will be baling by Wedneday.
Despite the dry spell, the spuds have early signs of blight.:( Looking at the Potato Council Blight Map, there's hardly anything reported in Devon, but it's still found me.

Now I'm a bit worried about my toms in the polytunnel ..... The spuds are only 10m away from there. :eek:0
