About the size of a football, but might not be quite as perfect as this one, due to animals nibbling bits, I think.

We ate most of one in 2010, but it beat us in the end! :o

They don't seem particular about location. One was in an area I'd cleared with glyphosate, while others have been in grass, including very long grass.

They go brown eventually, by which time they're no good to eat.

The ball gradually dries out and emits tens of thousands of spores when kicked or bumped. Later still, it becomes detached from the soil and rolls about, possibly for more than a year. One of ours has travelled the whole length of a field.

    Right.

That's it. I've had enough of this ruddy mist.

I have every sympathy with Cyd but I do not live in Scotland & I do not want to wake up once every 100 years to find Gene Kelly poking around in my outhouses.

That reminds me, I saw a couple of puff balls on my way out this morning.

The mist has rolled out again for the moment. The tide has probably changed.
Currently it's grey interwoven with darker grey coming up from the SW & with the sun desperately trying to come through horizontally as it starts to go down behind the cliffs.

Makes little difference, though, everywhere remains too wet to do anything.

Remarkably few people walking the coast path - unsurprisingly. :D
I bet the local tourism businesses are even more peed off than we are.
    Were they all in Barney?

I will report any puffball sightings if, as & when :)
