I would like to think that in my old age, when I've lived my life of adventure, that whoever is responsible, enables me to go with dignity. It's one of the few ways that animals have the advantage over us.

Believe it or not old horse has had a hugely adventurous life, and not always a nice one. If there were a horsey jackie collins or similar she would be a heroine in that novel. She was born on another continent, worked a hard and damaging career, was neglected by someone, then got saved. She doesn't like people much, they have given her little reaon to trust them. She loved to chase a ball sometimes, she was a polo pony, so we roll apples for her sometimes.

The vet is going to drop in tomorrow. I am positive its her heart....and its worked bloody hard. We will see what he thinks. Today her eyes looked dull, and i thought....no, i will not do this to you. She has always been a wild, and feisty woman of a horse...even when her body looked knackered she still galloped and ruled the herd. She no longer is lead mare, but they respect her as dowager, and she ranks second. Pretty impressive for her age and size.

A good long life, LIR. Fingers crossed for the vet visit tomorrow. Whatever the outcome, after a feisty life the old girl deserves a dignified end.

It was thick fog here this morning which didn't clear until just before lunch. :(
Then it was high cloud apart from an hour or so in the late afternoon.

Another wildlife encounter tonight. Story as told by DH......
I just went into the downstairs loo & was half finished :o when something shot past my left ear."That's a big moth", I thought..........No it's a bat!

Heaven knows how it got in there but we coaxed it into the entrance hall where it settled on a hat on the shelf & DH carried it outside.
It's been years since one got indoors & the last time was when DS left his bedroom window open & it mistook the top window for the eaves :D
That one took rather longer to persuade to leave as we had to encourage it downstairs & out of the nearest door. :rotfl:

Two deer this morning grazing right alongside the horses when i went to get them in for the day. The greyhound was a horror....but not aggressive, she ran at half speed than got out lf the way to let the second follow the first. They are obviously really brave deer, never been so close on foot out side richmond or bushy park! Pne of the thing i miss about riding, particularly riding through woods are those moments where deer join you, follow just off through the trees, mistaking your horse for someone free like them for a moment and ignoring your presence, which they presumably can smell.

Hope it's positive news from the vet lir, but if not, I know you will take the decision without a thought to your own feelings.

CTC, you have to run your business in a way that adapts to the times, and the good thing about a smaller concerns is that they can reduce outgoings more easily than the big boys. While it can't be nice laying people off, they would probably prefer that you're still around to re-employ people when the markets pick up again. ;)

Not much to report here. Lots of grass cutting, weed killing etc while we can.

Two partridges have taken up residence here. Luckily, the cats seem to think they are ours, like the chickens, so they ignore them. :A

Also, two swallows have returned to the barn and seem to be continuing with a nest they began last year, but then left. Has anyone else seen this before?

    Hi All
Just found this great website and thought we would join for some advice/help if possible.
We are considering buying to a small cottage with about 3acres and would really like to earn a small income from home if possible we are considering keeping a few animals (livestock) hens etc as we have some experience of this already. We also like to try and generate a small monthly income from home if possible the house will be too small for B&B or similar so we are looking for other possible ideas.
May be Internet based ideas such as eBay, Estay, online surveys this type of thing, understanding the rewards will likely be small to start but we could may be try several ideas and these combined may bring in a small home generated income.
    All ideas welcome with thanks

Do you mean the re-using of nests or the disappearing, Dave?
They often re-use their nests from the year before.
Could be all sorts of reasons for the disappearance - some nicer than others. _pale_ It could be that they have just found somewhere they are disturbed less.

    Hello Sparklight :hello:
I'm not the one to advise on Internet based businesses but there are many others on here who will be able to help.

I meant carrying on from where they left off, as I'm assuming it was them that started the nest. There are no other nests in there.

The nest is in a daft place....far too low to be safe, so maybe they will abandon it again.

Hi Sparklight. I don't do Internet business either. Strictly one to one, me. :D

Sparklight, I'm not much good either but if you read the old posts on here, they are quite enlightening as to how people make money in various ways. Necessity is the mother of invention and all that :D

The vet has been and old horse is still here, but he agrees she looks grim.
