The hedges shown are more like the lowland hedges (found in counties where they don't bank) but, once in place, they are treated much the same.
It's a much more complicated job to lay a lowland-type hedge, rozee, because they have to have rows of stakes &, for want of a better description, woven work. They need to be like this to give the hedges the strength & thickness because the stock is at hedge level.
In areas where they use banked hedges things are less complicated because the bank itself is what keeps most stock in. The hedge is like the natural barbed wire on top.

There are different styles of laying, its me is quite right. I love a staked and plaited top lay, stockproof immeadiately, and visually beautiful.

Do you mean like the ones they use in the Midlands, LIR?

Yes, thoug i first saw it in wet sussex.

Very much less 'natural' looking than those west country banks and laying, but equally lovely imo. I just love hedges. That ours aren't nicer is a bit of a shame....ours are mainly bramble tbh. :(

Well, some of the ones down here have to be pretty tall. Did you know you need a minimum 12ft fence/hedge to keep red deer out?
Here's a fairly common sight on the moor.......

I love the way the hedge ends up stepped as the tractor & cutter goes higher with each pass. :D:cool:

Well I have really taken to the good life and have had a productive few days. Im determined to turn into Tom and Barbara and have my small holding so for now I am making a conserved effort on the veg growing part until I have space to get anyone else here. Although a friend of mine is having chicks in a few weeks............:p

I have mown the lawn which was a feet in itself as I've never done it before having lived in flats most of my life! But needless to say I am rather impressed with myself - although hitting the red ants nest certainly wasn't pleasant!

I have also planted up four bags of potatoes although later realised I mixed up Charlotte and King Edward potatoes when I chitted them so god knows what's in what bag but we will see and hopefully they will produce nicely. They are in the bags to the left.

Then the 3 terracotta tubs are from back to front - blueberries, and raspberries and blackberries that are waiting to be planted as I ran out of compost!

Then the square planter is beetroot and spring onions. They are just seedlings at the minute but when they are being put into final positions and thinned I will top them up.

Then I have a tub of Rhubarb

Then the second square planter has onions, brocolli and lettuce in it.

Then the two small bags have peas in them but I will get another set of these as I still have plenty of pea seeds left.

Then in the greenhouse I have leeks, pumpkins, cucumbers and two types of tomatoes, and a load of sunflowers.

The hanging baskets at my front door have cherry tomatoes in too but a hanging basket approved variety

I still have a giant grow bag to fill with compost and fill with two types of carrots but I will do this tomorrow or when the boyfriend is home as he is bringing me two huge bags of compost from countrywide with him.

I think I may also change my name to Barbara!
(although the boyfriend wont let me have chickens yet!)

Any help much appreciated with advice or things to grow. I am already very strangely addicted to it and have been updating my blog with all my on goings.

    Ah a girl can dream................
    Time to find me again

CTC -spittalfields is a good Market, I'm also wondering about portobello road if as it sounds, you are selling fabrics and vintage gear. The last time I was there prices were expensive. Also brick lane Market is an interesting one. Tbh I find prices have gone up a lot in London markets in the last few years which could suit you :)

Sorry to hear about the Pekin & the kitty. One of the worst things I have had to do was put my last kitty to sleep, within a week of discovering she was Ill we had to do it so my deep sympathies. We waited a year & a bit afterwards then went to battersea & came back with our gorgeous little one, I didn't realise it but she melted the ice left in my heart from losing Pushkin.

I bought some sowing compost today so hope to get some seeds in this week. We flagged half of the greenhouse floor at the weekend with flagstones from free cycle so need to look out for some more :)

Sussex isn't very wet ATM! :D

Yay! I won a computer on eBay today. The one I'm on has a limited life expectancy, so I needed one to keep me going . Anyway, I saw this site's local eBay tool about a week ago:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3855255

Gave it a try, and wow, I got a computer + 19" screen + scanner printer, all good brands and with just a few hours on the clock for £100. Apparently, an elderly lady didn't take to it, so she got an elderly neighbour to put it on the Bay......

He even delivered it.....here!!! So I gave him his petrol & half a dozen eggs. :) (And with the long chat + tea and biscuits I got to skive off for half the afternoon too. :rotfl:)
