What is the going rate for weaners, CTC?

I've done it! I've bought some chooks. Won't collect them for a fortnight as I want them sexed, they're chicks at the moment. Jersey Giants. Probably completely inappropriate, but I love the breed and I was drunk! Damn Facebook!

Anyway, this gives me the chance to get the cop up and away. My job for tomorrow.

Life is good! Although three glasses of Soave makes it better!

    Alf, pls ignore first paragraph!

Living in a rural area often means services are more vulnerable, and our leccy supply has been having power loss blips since last night, just long enough to crash electronics  So rang WPD this morning, left postcode and got automated answer saying problem was known and they hoped to fix it shortly. 5 minutes later I get a call from a real person advising in detail what the problem was, how they would fix it and timescale. Credit where credit is due :T

    Rozee, chooks! :D

Damp and murky atm, but we needed the rain. Its been a bright quarter to date with a fair bit of sun so I'm not complaining. I have to stay in to wait for couriers, too damp to do much outside so will use time profitably listing now that leccy seems to be behaving. Learned some important lessons on achievable prices for rare items over last few days that should stand us in good stead going forward :)

I was too grumpy to post last night; the belt on the big mower snapped, and it's not been on there 10minutes, so another £50, or more if I can't do it.

Damn thing is going back on eBay, but what to have next is the real problem. I need something I can walk behind, but which is tough enough to stand hitting molehills. The Mountfield I push is OK for that, but it's too small.

Well done rozee. Now you have to get some accommodation organised! ;)

Rozee that is Fab news :beer: I like Jersey Giants too

re- the prices for weaners, anything from £1 up to £50..

depends on if you want breeds or x breeds, and weather you buy them at market, and the quality of them.

Sorry it sounds all vague, but thats the scale of it really..

the well grown on weaners we bought, we paid £30, BUT they were more like 12 - 14 weeks old.. bargin, the ones we went to see locally last week, they wanted £35, and they were the runtiest looking piglets I had seen, they had no bums, thin backends, 'wrinkly' skin etc..

Before we bought any piglets we went to the auction to have a look, with a friend of our who used to have pigs.. so we could see the quality etc... just so happens we didnt need our friend, as you could see the diff a mile off..

All I can say is.... they are funny and friendly, and it would be quite easy to get attached:o its not easy taking them to their end destination... and its allways easier to talk the talk..

Last thing... allways get less pigs than you want... as they do go through alot of food when they are growing/adults.. and it does get VERY expensive, if you cant subsidise their food

    ;)

Dave, have you tried mower repair places for a second hand machine? It's how I got my ex-council hayterette at a fair price and its a great reliable machine, but prob too small for your patch and it needs pushing. Maybe they'd do a px on yours on a self propelled reconditioned machine?

I just hope these Jersey Giant chicks don't turn out to be all cockerels! She's gonna keep them for me until they can be sexed. I'll have all of the hens and then try and find an unrelated cockerel in due course. Do you think it makes sense to get some hatching eggs from an unrelated bird and hatch them under a hen if one goes broody? If they're all cockerels, I'll take one and try and source some hens. Or should I take two? Sorry for the basic questions.

Pigs are way down the line, CTC, but I have seen people almost give weaners away and then seen them being sold for the forties and fifties, so i was curious about why that was. I don't really like pig meat, but i do like the idea of pigs and what they can do for the land, so as long as we have a way of off loading then pork etc, we may just give it a try - once the build is complete, so really it's next year.

i have contacted DVLA and they are going to send me a letter to say he is not here as im worried i will be blacklisted on this address. he owes a fortune !!!!! now getting letters re baliff's

Bless you, alf. There are always bad eggs. I've had the opposite problem all my life - not trusting anyone. It'd be nice to know where the line lies for a happy medium. I'm feeling my way ;)

I THOUGHT CHICKS WERE SEXED AT BIRTH ? OR IS THAT WRONG ?

i know you have to know what your doing to do it tho.
be aware that what looks like a hen can suddenly change tack and end up a cockerall..... until they are 12 weeks + it can be in the lap of the gods.....talking from experience there..;) :o
most hens dont go broody in thier first laying season so could be a wait..... why dont you consider buying a proved trio aswell. or a hen proved broody to take over your chicks?
my two ducks were sold to me as a pair.....nah ! but took ages to show otherwise...:rotfl: [p.s. the one with the dangling dingly dangly has never retracted but has been happy as larry so maybe originated from thailand ;) :rotfl:]

its a damp drizzly day here :(

ive put some of the many lillie plants i had into my pond and some iris. looks more like a pond now !
goose googins will mix happily with stanley day time but will NOT let him in his house at night so poor stan has to go into another shed

son has just headed off to donnington for the download festival. so he will be nursing a hangover by monday..:rotfl::rotfl:

i want to redocorate my bedroom but cant because my hip is still bad... :(
