hmmm...here we go again..I pay £450 a year in road tax and then someone who uses the road for free will have the cheek to complain about where i park my car

    let me educate you
Council Tax pays for the roads
so every Bus user, cyclist, pedestrian and car driver pays for them
FYI,this cyclist pays road tax and cycles
so with that and me paying council tax, surely I have a greater right than you?
now to really tax those grey cells
what about £0 VED rated cars?

    Unbelievable!

It's far from unbelievable. Things like this allow the council to say that they provide x miles of cycle facilities. I'm fairly sure there's either a requirement to provide a certain amount or grant money available for councils that provide that amount.

Most of the ridiculous cycle lanes you see on that "Cycle facility of the month" site can be explained by this, with the exception of that one from Holland where the cycle lane is 9" wide with one side being a sheer drop into a canal.

    even worse
Edinburgh is pushing to be a cycling city
they have marked 5% of the transport budget for cycling
however I worry about what value will come from that 5%

well how do you think my car is legal to go on the road?
oops,oh did you think the two were exclusive
why are you talking about council tax.everyone pays it
so you know see theres no point to you whining about paying (what you call) road tax in relation to paying for the road?

The change from "Road Fund Licence" and "Road Tax" to "Vehicle Excise Duty" was just a rebranding exercise by Churchill to try and stop people moaning about the fact that most of the money wasn't spent on the roads. Even the official literature presented to the public still refers to a "tax disc" 75 years after the rebranding.

FWIW, despite the above I don't object to cyclists using the roads, even for free. I do object to taxpayers money being wasted on poorly designed cycle lanes that reduce the available road space but are unsafe for cyclists to use thus forcing them to use the rest of the road anyway.

A properly designed cycle lane, one that can safely separate cyclists from cars and larger vehicles, is beneficial to both cyclists and drivers, something a lot of drivers fail to see.

Illegal cyclists cycling on the pavement and ignoring red lights - where do we post about them and name and shame?
OK then, for the record here is an extract of the open letter I sent to GMP and MCC:

'Cyclists themselves are not, however, entirely innocent. Every singly day I see cyclists running red lights, cycling on the pavement and cycling at night without lights. During freshers’ week when I first moved here I remember a PCSO, giving us a lecture on safety, crime and the like, telling us that cyclists on pavements were liable for a £30 fine, but I have never ever seen or heard of this happening.'

    Winds me up as well.

Come on.... Seriously, if children drove cars, they'd park in the middle of the road, they'd ignore traffic lights and signs, they'd probably think it was "bumper cars"........

Cyclists range all age's, the one's you see riding around on the pavements are more often than not casual cyclists and children/teenagers. Yet it's the serious and responsible cyclists that get all the abuse for it.

Hmm I'm afraid round here almost everyone goes through red lights, and many people who are certainly not children do all the other silly things.

I can see you are hard of thinking
slow down and read the words.
nowhere in my post do I mention or even hint at cyclist road tax
    however you said
.I pay £450 a year in road tax and then someone who uses the road for free

so who is using the road for free? pedestrians pay just as much as you to not use the road.

Obviously you cant argue your case as a mature adult and you try to insult others to cover your weaknesses...the op said he cycles to uni and he never said that he pays road tax on a vehicle he owns..I am out of this discussion and I will continue to park where I like as long as I am not breaking any law
