Sold £299 ebay item for £1.04. Shock!

I placed a new and unused item for sale on Ebay. Bulky item so pick up only.

There were lots of watchers (9) and I expected a bidding war to break out just before auction close. I got one bid for £0.99 and then the next bid at £1.04 won it.

He has got in touch to collect. Do you think he will hand over a bit more or just count out £1.04p? I have to wait in for him and then give him a hand.

Oh dear! 9 watchers is not a lot! I have between 25-40 on all of my items.

Good on you for going through with the sale though, many sellers may try and wriggle out of it!

They are not obliged to give you any more than £1.04 but he may do, if he is pleased with the bargain.
  • It's a shame, it didn't go for more from your point of view but collection only severly restricts your pool of buyers and if you didn't want to sell it for that little you should have started the bidding higher or put a reserve on. Still hindsight is a wonderful thing, just learn from your mistakes and move on.
He may give you a bit more, he may not - if it was obviously worth alot more than won for, and I was the winner, I may give £5 or £10, faffing about with small change is a pain.

Why did you list a 'collection only' item at 99p knowing it is not open to everyone?

just say it was sold elsewhere sorry for the inconvienience then wait a month and relist
  • Oh dear..what was it?

It sounds like an item of furniture. As other posters have said, you restrict your potential buyers to a minimum if listing as colletion only.

Dont forget you could have put a reserve on, or started the bidding at the minimum you wanted to get for it. To avoid fees in listing at this price, wait for a free listing weekend. These are now ridiculously frequent at about 2 per month.

Still learning! I thought 9 watchers was a lot. Clearly I shouldn't have started the listing at 99p. The item is new but my OH removed all the packaging which is why it can't be sent.

The buyer will have a round trip of 60 miles and 1&1/2 hours.

I happen to be driving to the town where the buyer lives and have offered to deliver it. I haven't heard back yet but am hoping he'll offer me some fuel money.

This advice is just so wrong I don't even know why I am bothering to point it out.

If the buyer has a 60 mile round trip then im sure he has weighed up the costs of collecting it and definitley knows that he has got himself a bargain.

Offering to deliver the item is a good idea if you are heading in that direction anyway, Im sure he would appreciate the gesture, if nothing else, and if sensible will happily offer a few notes, rather than coins in exchange for the item.

Going through with the sale at £1.04 is something a lot of sellers wouldn't do, so got on you for following it through, even though you know you've made a loss.

You're a seller we all want to come accross on ebay and dont forget that a good deed now will mean some good fortune for you in the future. - You never know, you might come across a misspelled super item that is being sold a few doors down from you and you get it for a pound and change as well. :T
  • Well, I think I'll need to agree a mileage rate in advance and not rely on his sense of fair play....

Not sure about the good fortune thing.....trying hard to raise some cash. At least I have friends though. Have been invited up to stay for the weekend, hence the trip.
