Sounds like its trying restore a faulty ipsw download.

Delete all iOS updates from the iTunes directory and allow iTunes to redownload the latest iOS update (5.1 for now).

    Normally in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates

iOS 5.1 isn't out until 9th March (according to rumours). The latest version is 5.0.1 unless he installs a beta version of 5.1, which is unwise in this scenario.

Also. Moderator. Why has this thread, originally named 'Apple vs the Sale of Goods act. Burden of proof' been amalgamated with an older thread about Vodafone? Some of the posts have gone.

I am no expert in iPhones. However, primitive logic suggests that you can prove that a general rule is incorrect by one counter-example, but you cannot prove that it is true even by hundreds or examples.

Its very very hard to BRICK the iphone. You can restore from jailbreak and most things.
The last thing Apple want is too many faulty phones back.
