I wonder what disabled people do if they dont have a car or access to one?

My husband does have a BB which is used very occasionally (at most 6 times a year when a family member can take him out) and although he won't admit it he has lots of problems that restrict him. Rheumatoid arthritis, heart trouble, Menieres disease, COPD to name a few.

We don't have a car, no family very close so we mostly rely on public transport. He has to walk right across the carpark if he goes to the shop not even from an ordinary parking space.

TBH he doesn't go out if he isn't up to that walk. He always needs a fairly long rest before he can attempt the walk back to the bus stop.

People with BBs and cars are very 'precious' about their parking rights and I doubt it ever occurs to them that some equally disabled people do not enjoy the same privileges as them, or indeed manage to live and shop without them.
  • OK then...depressed or suffering from depression.

OMG!! there is a lot more to mental illness than being a "bit depressed" !!!!!!

for some who do have a mental illness it does take a lot out of them meaning they cannot walk far and also suffer excruciating pains that there is no reason for.

another case of just because they don't look disabled doesn't mean there is nothing wrong with them

My dad has a BB as he's very elderly and has chronic heart failure so he can barely walk - my mother has to ferry him around to various appointments and he goes for a coffee once a fortnight with his friend. However she's terrified of using the badge as she's had so many rude comments, people either think because he looks so old he's not disabled just old, or if she's parking the car in the disabled space to pick him up she's had people complain at her as she's obviously not disabled herself. It's so sad because we would not be able to take him out without the BB, but due to people's comments my mum feels very anxious about using it. The ironic thing is there is always a very able-bodied driver parked in the one disabled spot next to his favourite cafe and she's too polite to ask him to move!

You can even have the disabled persons partner use it to go to and from work as his income 'benefits the disabled person'.

No, that is not true at all. It has to benefit the disabled persons needs, not monetary gain. So a husband/wife/partner of a disabled person cannot use it for work daily at all. They will not insure under those circumstances!

Additionally, DLA is not an out of work benefit, so the husband/wife/partner could drive the disabled person to work each day, and that would be allowed.

to be fair some of these "disabilities" are just patethic, typical beuracrats with no common sense come up with who gets a disability badge and who doesnt. If you can walk comfortably for a couple hundred meters you shouldnt get a badge imo.

Round my way they are far more strict than you seem to think, londonTiger. You have to be unable to walk 50 metres for an automatic Blue Badge, and be on higher mobility DLA.

I'm applying for one (when I can get out to get my photo taken) to use when friends and family ferry me around. I don't dare drive myself any more.
    may your good days grow

There have been several threads on MSE about this before and it's always been agreed that this is permissible.

I don't know where "Round my way" is but this certainly is NOT the case with Leeds City Council and most others I would expect. I applied for and (after going for a mobility test with them) got my blue badge and this was before I was awarded HRM and HRC.
  • They do insure disabled cars for the person to go to work my son has a mobility car an in my last job they added business insurance into the policy for my work purposes, mobility allows the car for many uses except as a taxi or delivery basically although the actual Tax disk on the car is another story that is supposed to be soley for the disabled person yet you are not allowed to purchase a separate tax disk when the car is being used for other purposes. And god forbid you park in a BB space with a disabled child !!!

A relative of mine doesn't claim any health benefits but has been given a BB because of knee problems affecting mobility.
