Then again, the police and banks probably have powers of investigation that eBay and Paypal don't have. eBay and Paypal cannot tell whether items reported as not turning up and for them to be able to do so would require sellers to pay an awful lot more in fees, probably prohibitive to continued usage of the services.

You can in fact pursue the buyer for fraud, since what she has done is still against the law. I think I heard on the radio last night (can't be sure, was in Subway at the time and concentrating on my book) that this sort of scam which had netted the thieves quite a lot of money had been busted. There's your start.

The problem with all these threads saying how easy it is to claim then going on to describe in detail how its done is they just encourage more and more people to do it........

That may be true, but the police and banks don't tend to side with the thieves.
Although in this case they don't know about it so how can they?

I'd report this to Ebay. I've had similar happen a couple of times, actually quite some time ago. The first was a seller claiming something wasn't fit to be sold and demanded a refund, that was after he'd listed it on his account and it hadn't sold, the other was someone claiming non receipt for an item they had listed. Ebay awarded in my favour on both occasions.

It's surprising how many of these cases don't get reported to Ebay or even the police. I'm not saying that either would be overly bothered, but if everyone reported and never gave up then the problems would lessen.

  • Aw I have had two low lifers who have done that on me, at the start I had sent off two items non recorded thinking people were honest. However they then received items, declared they had not and got a refund, therefore two dresses they had for free! Can not believe some people arghhhh
  • Just a quick update - I decided to report her to ebay, so went through the 'report this listing' process. Ebay did nothing. No surprise there, then.

Unusually for me, as I normally try to just let these things slide like water off a duck's back (don't want to waste my life worrying about scumbags), I still feel really aggrieved about this, and have spent more time than I should have done plotting horrible things to do with her contact details.

Last year when my flatmate was annoying me, I posted his number online somewhere saying he was giving away kittens... he got calls for weeks at all hours of the day.... not that I'm suggesting that would be the right course of action here ;)

  • I'd give her contact details to someone who'll sent inordinate amounts of junk mail... DFS!!!, just put their phone number and address into their enquiry form, they'll have spam and calls twice a day for the next 10 years!!! :D

Oh, and on the request a callback page, remember to put 7am then another for 10pm ;)
