Does anyone know which are the best mains to get (i.e. mains that will not compare with ASDA or mains that will give some jtd also). I am off to shop later - really fancy something nice for tea and this might just be my excuse ..... ;-)0

Thanks to Quoia for the detailed explanation, and I agree with everything said, except one small point. If the item fails to match then does not have any impact on the rest of your JTD... its just NA.
I find the process much simplier than suggested, putting it down as a bonus rather than a gamble if I get a JTD.
I have a large Tesco Extra about 3 mins walk from me... I dont have the time or inclination to go to Asda which is 15 miles away. I know my Tesco, feel comfortable there and I know where everything is in the store. I also collect points which give me a holiday every other year. So I would probably shop at Tesco anyway.
As others have said its fairly simple to create your shopping list, input it into mysupermarket and then print out a tesco vs asda price comparison. Then complete a shop at tesco dividing out those items that are cheaper at Asda. I then generally price match both receipts, in this way over a period of time you do get an idea of what will and wont price match.
My aim is to reduce my overall spend. The aim is not to maximise the price match to £20.
For example, we eat a lot of Belvita biscuits. Currently they are on sale at £1 in Asda, which is about £1.40 cheaper than Tesco. I will buy 5 packs of these and claim the JTD, as I know we would be buying these anyway and the Tesco price will never get down to £1 even when they are on sale.
An example where I could max my JTD but dont is when buying detergent. Persil, Surf etc .... theres always one at half price in the store eg £5 so why buy a brand thats £10 in tesco and £5 in asda just to get a JTD. Its not worth it. In any case if its £10 this week, then in the next fews weeks it will probably fall to £5 at some stage anyway.
Another good example is IAMs dogfood. We keep to the same brand as our dog likes it. For a large bag Tescos is normally £20 and Asda is £15 so I will receive £5 back for very little effort, plus there are often coupons around for Iams which make the deal a little sweeter, plus I get some more points.
JTD means I get a little bonus when I shop at Tesco, and Tesco get to keep my brand loyalty and a little extra market share from Asda (which is what its there for).0 -
Wow I sound like a Tesco fan boy!0

NOT what I said ..............
Just remember a few things ...

4. You are relying on the JTD TO WORK ....
Firstly ...IF the JTD fails to compare AT ALL you have bought the items at £2 each and IF they are something that cannot be returned for a refund then basically you're STUFFED. Even if you can return them it's a lot of hassle and you would still have to go to ASDA to buy them at £1 if you really need/want them.
Secondly, IF the JTD fails to compare as planned on THIS £2(T)/£1(A) item, then it can ALSO SCREW UP all the other JTD items that you put on the same receipt.
........................................
If the comparison "fails to compare as planned" (eg. for some reason it's NOT £1 at ASDA but £2.20) then it DOES IMPACT on the rest of your JTD

Wombled some cracking receipts today, just doing some finger exercises before i hit the price check site.
*Bend, and stretch, and bend, and stretch*
The ace thing about this, is that all the receipts that i would have left previously because the person had used their clubcard, i can now make use of, and i'm cleaning up after the messy beggers as well! Win win tbh0 -
Please can someone help me a little bit - I got 2 £10 meal deals today so does tesco price checker go off the individual prices for each item or the overall price?? For example, I bought 2 bottles of wine which were £7.99 each but ended up having £16.47 deducted for the meal deal offer so will I get the difference between tesco and asda price for each bottle??? (they're £4.98 in Asda) I did buy more items to use my £5 off £40 spend but tried not to buy any offer food in this transaction (i did get £10 for 3 meat packs but asda have same offer on those) xEx Comper turned Bargain hunter & Glitch lover

for most offers tesco adjusts the price of offer items so that they equal the total offer price
eg 1.98 OR 2 for £2 would show as £1 each on the price check
but for some reason meal deal items dont get adjusted.0
