Co-op complaint

Good afternoon,

I wondered if anyone can help me on how/who I report a supermarket.
Long story short: A friend of mine who went into co-op drunk on friday night and bought 11 packs of panadol extra and they were served to him in one transaction. Luckily nothing serious happened however, we are disgusted that this could happen.
I went into the shop today, however the manager wasn't in and was advised that he would call us later.

I would like to report this store as, as far as I can see, this is illegal and they need to be stopped.

TIA

You would expect the EPOS to have a warning programmed into the till for a maximum number to be purchased at one time? I think they would take this very seriously, as Co-op has pharmacies nationwide and is well aware the risks around multiple packs. I'm certain they will put some controls in place so this doesn't happen again in any of their supermarkets. Go ahead and complain to HO rather than the local store, it's the responsible thing to do under these circumstances.

    It probably is illegal.

You friend should be found guilty of trying to buy too much paracetamol whilst drunk.

Perhaps if he/she wasn't drunk, he/she would not have done such a silly thing.

My friend did it as he wanted to take his own life which if not stopped then he could have acheived it!

The next person that can buy this much in a shop may not be so lucky, hence me asking!!!!!!!

Buying 11 packets may not be illegal depending on how many were in each packet.
As the law currently stands, shops can sell paracetamol in packets of up to 16 tablets (and packets of 32 in pharmacies) and although there is a government guideline that states no more than 2 packets should be sold to anyone at one time, this is only a guideline and not a legal requirement.

Selling multiple packets only becomes illegal if the total number of tablets exceeds 100, at which point a prescription is needed.

Report them to trading standards ?
  • Hope your friend is ok? They must be feeling pretty miserable right now. :(
If it were me, I would try HO first, if no joy, take it further if you feel that's the right course of action to take.

Im always puzzled by these 'guidelines'

I mean if someone wanted 11 packets of pills they could go through the tills in 6 separate transactions and there is nothing the store can do.

Is it really that different to having someone buy 11 in one go? No.

I've never really understood the rule - especially as you can buy as much alcohol...petrol...paint thinner...lighter gas etc etc as you want.

To me the 'guideline' is more of an inconvenience to the retailer to enforce than anything else...

I imagine the member of staff serving you would refuse to sell you them after the first couple of transactions. Remember stores don't have to sell their goods to you, so when you say there's nothing they can do, actually there is.

I suppose it comes down to statistics... i'm betting a significant percentage of those attempting to OD would do so with pills rather than petrol, alcohol or paint thinner,
As far as lighter gas is concerned.. that's usually used by homeless people to get high rather than kill themselves (at least in my area anyway).
