Sainsbury's Porridge Oats 1.5kg for £0.85p - and it can be found cheaper in other shops.
just do as others have said and soak the oats overnight in either the milk or water and cook for approx 2.5 minutes. I then add some fruit - banana or stewed apple or crushed pineapple - or sugar or golden/maple syrup to sweeten. A dash of cinamon or nutmeg helps too.
Of course the traditional way is to add salt but this Scotswoman doesn't like it.0 -
I can't seem to make porridge like my Gran used to, mine is always too gloopy. I remember my Grans was like a solid island floating in milk with salt of course... any ideas??0

i actually cook the apple in with the oats
sweetens it too

I used to make "instant oats" by whizzing porridge oats [Mornflake - they're organic and cheap!] until it turned to powder in either a processor or blender. I then added some sugar and whizzed it all again. I would keep this in a large jar and the children helped themselves. It took no time at all, it seemed, in the microwave and would even cook itself if you poured on very hot milk and left it to cool down enough to be comfortable to eat. I suppose, if you were really MSE OS then you'd heat up the milk, and cook it in a Thermos flask - bearing in mind that it expands!

oh, and if you have any dried apples/strawberries whizz them up separately after you've done the oats as they make a lovely powder to sprinkle on after it's cooked. Just make sure the fruit is truly dry, no use with soft dried fruit such as sultanas. If you want them, just bung a few in before the milk!If you see me on here - shout at me to get off and go and get something useful done!!

My granddaughter loves it when I make her my extra special porridge
Just cook the oats by whichever method you prefer
Add a pinch of salt, some honey
then the special bit

I make my own much cheaper version of Oats So Simple. I am following slimming world eating plan. I put about 8 oz in the food processor and grind it down. I then measure it out into 1oz portions into plastic sandwich bags. I usually make a weeks worth at a time.
Tippped into a bowl, I then add 7 fl oz water and cook first for 1 minute - stir and then a further 1 and a half minutes. It turns out lovely. Add a bit of golden syrup and drib of milk. These manufacturers of the small packets of oats must be making a blooming fortune!!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

DD2 loves oat so simple - we get 8 sachets for £1, so this is something else we can cut back on.
