Pipkin I forgot to say to not grind it into really tiny pieces, look at the size of the oatso and do it like that. Not only is it cheaper - think of all that packaging you save on! Good for the planet too!!!!!:)

to be honest if you use the value oats you could get away without grinding them down at all.

Yes I plan to buy the value oats next time. Only last time I was at Sainsbury's they had the Good For You ones and no value and I thought they were horrible, massive and never seemed to cook properly. I have been using these up though (money saving) and they have worked well this way.

    Hi DdraigGoch

What weight of powdered oats and how much milk do you use together please?

    Pipkin xxxx

It's rather hit and miss, Pipkin. I tend to fill the blender up to only a quarter full, whizz it, add milk until it looks a fair bit paler. I tend to put a tablespoon in at a time, via the opening bit on the Kenwood [it was my Grandma's and now it's mine :T]. I do the same with the sugar - usually use brown as it gives a nice caramel hint. I taste the porridge mix after a tablespoon of sugar and adjust from then on.

Sorry no "proper" recipe - it's one of those ones you make as you prefer. Give it a go and let me know what you think, please.

  • I grind it down in the food processor until it is ready brek consistency and then add a little salt and some sweetner powder. I just put the powder in a bowl and stir in boiling milk until I get the consitency I want - it varies how much milk it takes each time for some reason. I also think you definitely need to add the little bit of salt (about a tsp for 1 kg of oats) - it totally changes the taste.

Just remembered this thread - and thanks, Jane, for the reminder about the salt. I haven't tried it before *heads off determinedly towards the kitchen*

I like to sprinkle brown sugar (use the little sachets that I collect from cafeterias :o ) but don't actually stir it into the porridge. It gives a lovely toffee flavoured liquid on the surface mmmmmmmmm.

Only ever buy SP oats from Asda! OH sometimes gets more fancy stuff from Home Bargains at reduced prices.

if you have one of those little mini food processor choppers (like Delia uses in her current programmes) you can blitz up your oats in these. If you have a stick blender you could also try using one of these in a sturdy tall container to chop up your oats.

Yes I can vouch for myprotein's ultra fine oats! They taste great, great value and are healthy for a quick breakfast shake!
