    Hello!

I've been reading through this thread and finding lots of interesting stuff. I've recently passed my test and been looking at the cheapest cars I can find (basically 5 doors and under £500).

I'm up in Scotland, so I know my options are somewhat less than down south. I've been checking Gumtree, eBay and Autotrader.

Just wondering if someone can point me to something I may have missed.

    Cheers!
Only think I can think of is sweet shop windows, local papers and local facebook buy and sell pages. Good luck!

There is a group on Facebook called 'Cars Under £500' go and join that. But it can be hard finding local cars as not everyone seems to put location on their ads.

(sits back and waits for 'its not a real porsche', 'parts cost the earth' etc)

If it came out of the Porsche factory with Porsche badges on it, having been assembled by Porsche workers, then it's a real Porsche. It's more of a Porsche than an Audi, in my book.
Amusingly, most of the anti-924 bias I've heard comes from toe-rags who are only fanbois and who can't afford any of them.
  • Tried to buy a 924 on ebay around 10 years and 7 weeks ago. It was going to be my treat for my 30th.

It went for a smidgen over £500, just above my maximum bid.

Got a second chance email but there had only been 2 of us bidding so I assumed the other one was the guys mate and said no.

People seem to say that about pretty much any car.

The Boxster isn't a proper Porsche.
The 996 isn't a real 911 as it is water cooled.

924 or 944 both look tempting. Just drive a car that you like and don't worry about those that can't run one themselves.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I have to say its the only one I've ever had that I drive for the sake of driving. For a thirty year old car its amazing how little there is wrong with it. Rear demister, electric sunroof, electric windows, headlamp washers, etc, all working. The only thing that isn't is the electric left wing mirror. Kind of looking forward to learning how to fix that though :) There's a strange sense of happiness that comes with having a car you can fix yourself. Takes away all the stress of when it goes wrong. There's a photo of it here, if anyone is interested

I also love the looks I got when it wouldnt start at a motorway service station on the way home, and in heels and a dress I shimmied under the back with a screwdriver to tinker. "Do you want some help love?" "Nah fixed it" :rotfl:

They're great fun to drive, manual clutch and steering take a bit of getting used to though..

Thats interesting.. I guess I'm a student, so having any Porsche is pretty acceptable, and so far nobody's been anything but nice about it. Suddenly lots of people need lifts though.. :rotfl:

If there is a particular type of car you are interested in, it may be worth checking out forums/clubs dedicated to that, as they often sell cheaper to members

Had an engine management light come on with the newer (the ST170).

Found a similar thread on the Ford Owners Club, but doesn't seem to have any clues. Any Focus owners have any ideas?!

ETA: Someone's told me how to do a dashboard diagnosis. Will put onto another thread and link here.
