  • Sorry, but it's the plain old Rover L series (developed from the Perkins Prima).

Not that that's a problem, it's a fantastically reliable engine in its own right, the L series - simpler than the BMW 2.0D (which was only fitted to the Rover 75) and fewer things to actually go wrong.

Absolutely bulletproof lumps. With a surprising turn of speed down the Shap at 2am, so I've heard.

Had an old Montego 2.0DL estate many year ago. Did well into the 40s MPG, and was for its time a rocketship of a diesel.

Bit of a tweak to the wastegate actuator and it went even better. Sadly got written off by a taxi driver who rear-ended it at 50mph.

Cut your losses on the MOndy. Sell big bits and scrap it. I've had 3 mates with these, all have died due to injector faults. I would never recommend diesel mondeos. It's a shame, as they're otherwise good cars but those engines SUCK!

Of the three, i"d go ROver - after a bit of research. If I recall those have a BMW derived Diesel and actually tough as nails and very reliable. Plus you get leather and stuff. Looks twice the car inside of the honda and thrice the corsa. If the engine checked out, it would be my choice.

Cheers for advice - ended up rebuying an old Hyundai matrix I owned and only sold last year for 3100 - took it back for 2 - a 2008 model with 17500 miles on the clock. It has tow bar so can do a bit of business with it. But if any car was made for women to do shopping in it was the matrix.

Have tried to break down mondy but cant get drivers seat out - the reversal mechanism is broke so cant take seat back to get at bolts, as I know I could get 100 for whole leather heated seat set. Could'nt get tow bar off either - just jammed right in and nuts aren't budging. Wheels seem to be coming tho so i'll have to make do with about 259-80 scrap where I should be getting about 420.

OLD Audi 80 bought for £175.
Sold the 'private' plates off it for £150 the next week.
Drove it for about a year with no major problems.
    :)
Would you say that to a stranger's face in the street? No? Then why type it on a forum?

First car was £25 Austin Cambridge. Drove it for the year with no trouble and 6000 miles. Next MoT was too expensive to be worth fixing though.
Latest car is a Hyundai Lantra, cost £1,000 over seven years ago. We've done 70K miles in it since (150K miles on car in total) with no major problems except the clutch which was £80; I changed it myself and that was only due to my wife using it for her job - lots of driving in local traffic. It's been a gem.

Picked up 2002 VW Golf GTI TDI couple of weeks ago, £950 for one owner car. Not in best condition inside or out. Cleaned up well with a good wash and picked up new interior on Ebay for under a tenner.

Nearly done 1000 miles since I got it and looks like it's doing over 50 MPG. Really can't complain about bangernomics at all!

106 1.5 diesel , paid £470 with 8 months mot and 4 months tax nearly got 70mpg out of her the other day too. full of dents and sounds like a tractor and also leaks from the sunroof as well but i will be sealing the sunroof with silicone and because its such a basic motor i plan on learning a thing or two about maintenance . purchased some new tools, haynes manual, lifting kit too which i thought was a good start. fuel does seem to last for ages , will plan on getting on my push bike to ride to work when it gets a bit nicer out then i can save a bit more money :)
