The last bangernomic van I had was a Mk2 Transit I paid £250 for, ran it for 3 years and sold it for £200. It wasn't high mileage though, but on the m'way (where it earned its living) I could squeeze 30mpg out of the 1600 petrol lump. The later mark Transits with the DI engines were much, much better, almost unburstable and would do spaceship mileages.
My last Tranny, a Mk6, was bought nearly new, ran it for ten years and recently sold it for banger money. The buyer got a bargain.

Well done davidjwest in getting a solid, old Pug. That diesel (apart from its slightly weak gearbox) or the old 1.9, non-turbo diesel Clio must be the best two, economical, tough as old boots bangers to look for.

Sadly my Mondeo 2.0 TDCi failed me a couple of weeks ago, fuel pump went at 203k and the repairs were not economically viable. I was told that there was likely to be damage to the injectors as they found bits of metal in the fuel filter. Total cost to repair was £700 for the pump and then another £8-900 for the injectors, just not viable for an '04 plate with that mileage on it.

So I'm now driving in a "P" reg Pug 306 diesel, I paid £550 for it with 98k on the clock, a bit pricey really but I need something with good MPG and there wasn't much around.

Fingers crossed it's done another 2k for me without any issues, airbag warning light is on and the drivers door won't lock but other than that all electrics are working, even the sunroof! No obvious signs of rust, I did have to stop on the first long trip to be recovered, turned out the front wheels weren't tightened up!

Time will tell if it's a success, will report back in due course.

have a fiddle under the seats with the (orange??) cable

i believe it can cause the air bag light to come on

give it a google, good luck!

I recently ran a 406 upto 310thousand, without and real dramas, sold it on, still going strong now!

    Well, I've got another banger.
Dual zone climate, cruise control, heated electrically adjustable memory position seats, 10 months MOT and 45MPG for.... £600!

Had it for a month so far, done 2000 miles and seems solid as a rock.

And yes, it's British. Pictures coming soon!

I would have created another thread for this question but I do believe it is relevant to the bangernomics mind-set.

Watching an old Top Gear last night reminded me of the time the researchers managed to buy an old Volvo for a *claimed* £1 as it was an old trade-in at a big dealer.

Has anyone tried to get an old trade-in like this? They are cars which will obviously be going straight to auction but are dealers willing to part with examples like this before actually being sent off or do they normally have a deal with the auction house to just send cars they don't want on their forecourt through?

Not saying I could find something for £1 but if it's a technique that can be used, surely it's worth a try?

I think you'd have very limited success - what TV programmes can get away with persuading companies to do is one thing - if indeed it was true - but completely another what they'd be willing to do were the customer a private individual.

Any substandard (most!) trade-ins have two choices, auction or scrappy. Too much liability involved in selling either to trade or punter. The £1 thing is the same as the £1000 you got for your trade-in. If its destined not for retail, it will be net zero car. Whatever you got for it as a trade-in has been balanced by the padded price you paid. I doubt if there is any professional trader still out there still willing to waste their time with space fillers and the space cadets who come to view them.
