The merc/voyager question was answered for me. The big car failed its mot and although I could probably justify spending 600-800 on it, decided not to.

Bit of a struggle getting everything in the other car for our fortnights holiday, but we got there.

Going home will be easier, what with a passat appearing for sale within a couple of miles of us.

Deposit left, should get it in a couple of days.

Can I add my '95 BMW 518i Touring? Bought in '06 for £3000 with 73K on the clock. Currently showing 113K. Been LPG converted as I was SE for a while and clocking up the miles, it's covered less than 4k in the last year.

My biggest problem with it at the moment is the peeling laquer as a result of a neighbour having a Starling nest in their eaves, even though the car was kept as clean as possible, the damage has been done (you can tell it's from the birds, as the laquer has peeled in streaks where the birds flew to and from the nest)

Any ideas how I should deal with it, and cost?

You could try clay bar treatment then build up the polish layer if it hasn't gone too far.

Sadly I think it has, now got palm sized patches were the laquer has already lifted and these grow each time it rains. Had to spend a lot of money on OH Omega trying to keep it running without success (blocked oil breathers), and getting him a new car ate into the money I had saved for getting mine sorted :(

  • A M8 has been running bangers for years - it all averages out @ £500 per year excluding road tax and insurance - I`ve lost track of the motors he`s had . But now it`s a 20 year old -1 owner - 5 series BMW , 6 cylinder diesel :D Just 120k miles . I think this one will last 5 years , I`ll post back then if it does ;)

Diesel are the cars that will do moonship miles if it was made well and looked after. Problem is 120k over 20 years means its been sat doing nothing too often which might be a problem and if so can BMW parts be got cheap I wonder

LPG also great over many years. The reason is that it will not break down the oil like petrol does, so its like having the finest quality oil ever made in comparison to an average petrol. Diesel obviously takes care of itself, petrol is a solvent.

Does anyone have classic car insurance ? I hear this is the very cheapest avenue from a former AA broker

My van was not a bangernomic when i bought it, however im sure it will be by the time im finished with it. Had to replace clutch, steering column, brakes all round, 2 tyres, wiper motor, altenator, filter and then some. Total cost was about £1600 so will be running it into the ground now as opposed to original plan of for a year or two. Does anyone buy bangernomic vans??

Sadly my Mondeo 2.0 TDCi failed me a couple of weeks ago, fuel pump went at 203k and the repairs were not economically viable. I was told that there was likely to be damage to the injectors as they found bits of metal in the fuel filter. Total cost to repair was £700 for the pump and then another £8-900 for the injectors, just not viable for an '04 plate with that mileage on it.

So I'm now driving in a "P" reg Pug 306 diesel, I paid £550 for it with 98k on the clock, a bit pricey really but I need something with good MPG and there wasn't much around.

Fingers crossed it's done another 2k for me without any issues, airbag warning light is on and the drivers door won't lock but other than that all electrics are working, even the sunroof! No obvious signs of rust, I did have to stop on the first long trip to be recovered, turned out the front wheels weren't tightened up!

Time will tell if it's a success, will report back in due course.
