Any advice on what to look out for? I've never bought a used car before, have no idea about cars whatsoever and I'm worried about being ripped off, lol.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :D

The Merc "hearse" will average no better than 22mpg. Perhaps better to work on immaculating your current car for sale and jettisoning the finance before getting something else? It could end up a very expensive paperweight.

    Here's a challenge what's the best Bangernomic 4x4?
I've looked at Discovery 2.5Tdi, Pajero 2.5/2.8Td, Trooper 3.1Td all with the idea of running on Veg but all seem rather expensive to buy 2nd hand.

3.1 Trooper would be my choice out of them. I had a 3.1 SWB Commercial with SOTF "shift on the fly" 4WD and LSD and was a great machine. Like a big Lego Technic model and even a chimp could fix it. Parts were cheap enough and Milners do most of the bits for them... Dealers gave comedy prices.

On its own it would do around 24mpg but spent most of its time towing Plant and Livestock averaging about 18mpg.

186K on it when I sold it, Cost me 2 rear Discs 2 Rear Springs Set of Tyres and Servicing in 2 years.

Theres still some VX Montereys out there with the 3.1 engine... Same truck different badge...

Never really liked the Disco's although I could be persuaded to try a TDV6 Commercial.

Reason being seen this on Gumtree although a rather odd advert turns out to be a 3.1D:

Ideally you want that exact car with a diesel (non CDI) engine for veg oil. Looks good for what it is though!

Problem would be parts costs I guess. Old Merc would be ideal but German brands went a bit wonky in the mid nineties as they tried to integrate east germany but its so old surely its already shaken out the faults ?

3.2l petrol engine I'd love to see the performance and maybe ok on the motorway but it'll cost more then it saves around town.
Disqualified from bangernomics may be the supreme court judgement on this - still interesting :)

Yup, 18 mpg around town. My C-Class 2.6 estate does 31 mpg ish on the motorway and open roads. Average about 27 mpg.

Nice motors, parts prices are ok unless you need a dealer part.

Can be a money pit unless it has been really looked after. Examples, auto box needs a fluid change @ about 100k, engine mounts drop due to age causing exhaust clearance issues. All ok if you fancy the DIY.
