Most of my colleagues use the money to lease Mercs and BMW's or other decent "prestige" cars. Instead of doing this I buy a 8 or 9 year old Volvo, with a high spec, 60/70,000 miles on the clock and a full service history for about £4,000 or so. After one year its paid for, and other than servicing and repair costs ( and I allow a very generous a £1000 a year for this) I am quids in. I usually change cars every 3 years, and get about 1500 to 2k for the old car as a private sale.0

Thought I'd bump the thread again as I might be looking.......
The Mercs great, but my oldest is going to be learning soon and the wifes not wanting another winter with our grand voyager (the heaters not very good).
I love the Chrysler and dont want to part with it, so I'll probably be selling the Merc and looking for an A4 Avant or a Passat estate.0 -

The old Astra was taken off to the scrap yard last Monday (got £130 for her) and in her place I have a Peugeot 406 estate diesel.
Full service history with filters, oil, cambelt etc all changed at the correct intervals, pristine interior and exterior (back seat had never been sat in!), 160k miles, every conceivable optional extra on offer at the time the car was built, 12 months ticket and 6 months tax, R reg...so not a young car.
£750.
She drives like a dream, so comfortable and her MPG is not bad either compared to the Astra (who I am sure used more fuel than she should have). The novelty to me is that things still work! From rain sensing windscreen wipers to finally, yes finally, having a car with remote central locking that actually works!
She may have been a bit top end with the price but the security in knowing the garage she has come from (where we all have our services, repairs and MOTs done - so if he sells a lemon to me, he loses out on lots of business) is priceless. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
well done! No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0

Sounds like a great car Sue- hope you get many years of value motoring. Can we have some pictures please?0

Sue; is it the 1.9TD? When you look at the engine does it have a "flying saucer" like object at the front of the engine towards the driver's side?

If so more bangernomics can be had by running on veg oil instead of diesel. Most 406 1.9TD do have the Bosch fuel pump so you should be lucky.
Incidentally, the same engine in my xantia is now on 207000 miles and still pulls very well indeed with no oil usage0 -
It's the 2.1 westwood68.
And by goodness, am I enjoying the fact it is a 2.1 compared to the rather weedy 1.7 in my Astra, it is no longer put foot down and wait 5 seconds for a response, she goes like a rocket from a junction! We made it! In that case; stay off the Veg Oil! It will break in next to no time but as long as you're getting good MPG and enjoying. That's the main thing0

I need to buy a reliable banger for under £500 if possible. Just sold my Impreza since couldn't afford to run the stupidly expensive thing with 18MPG and regular expensive garage services. I was planning to buy a 4x4 for around £1500 but not much worth touching in my price range so need just a little run around for under £500 to give me transport for the year otherwise I've only got the motorbike which isn't the best for big shopping trips or riding on icy mornings come winter.
What's the general opinion of these:
1.3 Fiesta Zetec
1.7D Astra (running on veg oil)
800cc Daewoo matiz
What other cars do people suggest?0
