I'd be interested to see figures for pence per mile as that's the crucial bit surely?

My current car, Mondeo 2.0TDCi has cost me around 18p per mile since I bought it, assuming I sold it tomorrow for £0, including everything, fuel, tax, insurance, depreciation, servicing, MOTs and repairs.

It's not exactly a banger (or wasn't!) as I paid £1,500 for it as a CAT D and another £1,600 to get it on the road.

I've done 90k miles in it in the three years since I got it, I doubt many "bangers" would put up with that treatment and be as reliable.

But the ppm figures would be interesting. Having said all of this my car has just started costing me money so it may well be time to get rid of it.

  • Pence per mile is still not an accurate way to work out what's better value for money. Someone who does 25K miles a year will most likely work out cheaper per mile than someone doing 5K miles if they have had a lot of repairs.

    Good point.

I am currently running at 23.2p per mile in the Rover 600 for just fuel only. Adding in the cost of the car, ins, tax and fuel and the figure changes to 79.4p per mile, but I have only done 1902 miles since buying the car.

All figures worked out through Fuelly.com
  • Stopped working it out, I've put 2 tyres on the audi (cost about 20% of purchase price of the car:eek:) and taxed it.

MOT due January, as the cars great bodily (and a return pipe leak coming up the M6 undersealing the car in veg) and running fine, I'll happily spend whatever it takes to get another ticket.

Glad to hear it is running well and I like the veg underseal for free- nice touch!

Just as a quick off topic interest post...

Has anyone running on veg managed to keep the bodywork below the filler cap free of the dreaded "old veg-oil runs"? 4 years now and no matter how careful I am, it always grows with time.

Still it is a banger and I don't much care. At least it helps to stop it rotting..
  • I bought some cream cleaner once, that removes it, but i've never been able to prevent it.

i've also used a harder than usual brush to remove it.

I know the MOT wasnt due until January but I was looking at another Audi 80 Estate with a years ticket (320 miles away, £399 and no bids with 2 days to go).

So I put it in today.

Failed as expected, needs a front disc, pads are low (i'll do both discs obviously)wishbone bushes and rear axle bushes. 1 of the number plate bulbs are out too.

So for the needed stuff (inc MOT fee) we should be looking at £160.

Theres an advisory on a rear tyre, I'll replace both of them since winters approaching.

Nearly forgot, £25 for an oil and filter change too.
  • I have not done this for years but it brought back many happy years with £1,000 cars. All lasted for 3-4 years until finally giving up the ghost:
    Citroen 2CV
    VW Polo
    Subaru big boxy estate
    Happy days :)
