My banger success.
Recent purchase 2004 picasso 1.6 petrol.
114000 miles full service history. Serviced to an inch of its life !
10 months mot. Not failed and mot or any advisories for 6 years. Everything replaced as and when needed and receipts to prove. 4 brand new tyres ..
All for £150.00.
Not sure I'd call it a success yet. You've only just bought it. Come back in 10 months time.0 -
I STILL haven't bought my new banger. I keep changing my mind. After my A4 experience, I can't really decide what to do.
Near me, is a Citroen Pluriel (those horrid things that Jeremy Clarkson tore apart on the worst car in the world)
53 reg, 86,000 miles, for just £300. 12 months MOT. The roof is apparently completely dead hence the low cost. However, the Pluriel roof is also the worst system in the world, so as someone who has absolutely no interest in ever using it, I'm tempted as I just don't care.0 -
Also, the the seller is throwing in the parts to fix the roof?
eBay those, this car could nearly pay for itself0 -
I wouldn't buy that if I was u. Even for bangernomics..
If it's got that wrong with it. There will be other things wrong0 -
Quickly reignite this thread, I still haven't bought a banger.......
But I might just have found one. Going to view it tonight. My fiancees brother has been driving it for the past 12 months and has decided he wants a Golf.
It's a W Reg Mazda Demio, FSH, 60,000ish on the clock, 4 brand new tyres, never failed an MOT.
The dealer has offered him £200 trade in, so I've offered to match that.
It's the 1.3 GXI I believe, so £150 tax, 40 MPG, remote central locking and leccy windows although no AC unfortunately. I'll live without it.
I'm not going to lie, it's mind numbingly boring, plenty of plastic trim on the interior and I've seen him pottering around in it a few times and it's definitely not fast. It's not going to win any awards at a beauty convention either, but from all I've read online, it's a reasonably practical vehicle, that's half decent on fuel and has a solid enough engine.
If the mileage is really that low, could be an ideal car to run into the ground for a couple of years.0 -

At £200, I think my mind is made up. what's really to go wrong? Heck if I got three months out of it, it'd have been worth it0 -
Will do. Viewing it tonight, so I'll probably decide tonight and drive it home.

If I was in need of a little run around for little coin I'd be taking it!
Although the £150 tax would scare me now as I've just renewed the tax on my 207 HDI for another year at £30! :cool:0 -

So, I sat in one the other day, went and visited a 1.8 Ghia model near where I work. I'm not really a huge Ford fan but my word, they're really quite nice, or at least this one was. Heated leather seats that are very supportive, lovely dashboard, radio controls on the stalks..... really a surprisingly nice and comfortable car. The price was probably a little bit high, but then I saw the tax.
Holy !!!! balls, £250 odd quid a year. I didn't mind paying that for the Audi, after all it was a bit of a missile and the fuel economy was a bit ropey, but this was a 1.8 NA bloody Focus. Hardly the epitome of speed, and knock out a good 38-40MPG.
I really couldn't swallow that tax every year, so I backed away (not the only reason to be fair).
This is the big reason I was considering one of those Daihatsu Sirion horror shows. Yeah, they might be ugly as sin and only a 1.0 engine, but they're £30 tax and the fact they were so cheap with to begin, means you can grab a 57 or 58 reg for as little as a grand.0 -
Viewed the Demio and I am soon to be the proud owner of it
Proud is a strong word. It's not got 60k on the clock, rather 74k which is still pretty low. Body work is all good, 4 brand new tyres, 5 door, alloy wheels, remote central locking, electric windows on every door except the boot, nasty aftermarket CD player that'll be coming out and impressively the electrics are all fine. Only damage I've found is a broken fog light glass, which is £15 off eBay. Won't be replacing it anyway.
Reasonable sized vehicle in truth. Surprisingly spacious. The cabin is like something from the 80's though and the engine bay is bloody archaic to look atCable throttle etc. All kinds of parts that look like they were probably found in a 1980 Ford Cortina as well. I'm yet to find the OBD2 port, it's quite possible it doesn't have one.
However, there's something I quite like about it. It's old and a bit rough, but it comes across a solidly built car and they were very popular in Japan. Plus I reckon it'll be as easy as pie to work on. I might retrofit some heated pads under the seats for winter. It looks very easy as the cushions are simply zip on like your usual sofaSimplicity!!!
Engine bay looks like this:0
