getting close to MOT time for the megane again
so far ive replaced CV boot on the drivers side..
and i think it may need a wheel bearing on the rear drivers side too.. (dont have a press so will end up paying mechanic mate to do it)Sealed pot challenger # 10

The old Astra was taken off to the scrap yard last Monday (got £130 for her) and in her place I have a Peugeot 406 estate diesel.
Full service history with filters, oil, cambelt etc all changed at the correct intervals, pristine interior and exterior (back seat had never been sat in!), 160k miles, every conceivable optional extra on offer at the time the car was built, 12 months ticket and 6 months tax, R reg...so not a young car.
£750.
She drives like a dream, so comfortable and her MPG is not bad either compared to the Astra (who I am sure used more fuel than she should have). The novelty to me is that things still work! From rain sensing windscreen wipers to finally, yes finally, having a car with remote central locking that actually works!
She may have been a bit top end with the price but the security in knowing the garage she has come from (where we all have our services, repairs and MOTs done - so if he sells a lemon to me, he loses out on lots of business) is priceless.
Thought I would update this post from June 2013
Peggy is still going, still feels lovely to drive and even better, only needed the hand brake adjusted for her MOT last week.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

Another French pass here today for my Pug 405.
It did need a front wishbone bush and a little freeing of the n/s/r brake (hadn't noticed any symptoms but it was dragging pretty badly on the roller tester) but other than that no problems, no advisories at just shy of 210k miles
So I rewarded him with a set of glow plugs (well, the "free" remains of the set I got for my wife's 525 a few months back before finding she only needed 2 of the 6). No more smoky start-ups - for anyone who's been on holiday on Anglesey recently, those atmospheric early morning mists may well have been me starting the Pug0 -
The problem for me is I am itching for a new "banger" every couple of years.
The year was 2002 - the price of the car was £free - the mother in-law (to be at the time) was throwing out a 1988 Nissan Micra, but I did not have a car. I gave it an oil change (very easy due to high ground clearance) and changed the air filter. Car worked fine. The exhaust pipe fell off when I went over a speed bump - £45 to get that fixed and that was it. Sold the car for £100 to a family friend who wanted to teach their 17 year old daughter. So I suppose I made a profit on the car really, albeit tiny!
The only other cheap car (not really <£1000) was a 1997 BMW 318i E36. Cost about £1000 at 92k. Wonderful car to drive, probably still the best I have driven - amazing gearbox. Ran that for 2 years and sold to a friend for £750. Amazingly this big RWD old petrol managed 40mpg!To err is human, but it is against company policy.0 -
its looking like the meggy aint gonna make the next mot.
its just lost all power and wont rev past 3k. all since i changed the map sensor. hoping a battery disconnection for a few hours sorts it out.. otherwise its car heaven for itSealed pot challenger # 10

Can't you just put the old MAP sensor back? Or try another one?0

its not the MAP.. i think it was just coincidence that it happened like that. my mechanic mate thinks its blocked cat.. so getting it done next weekend.. 66 for cat and 20 quid for him to fit it (ball ache of a job)
i should add that the cat was flagged as knackered at last mot (6k ago) so the last 6k miles would of probably killed it altogetherSealed pot challenger # 10

well its looking like the old girl is going to be scrapped by the end of the month..
took the cat off and its not blocked.. can see daylight etc when held up to the light.. and it still wont rev very well..
18 months for an inital £150 wasnt bad.. will get £70-100 scrap for it..Sealed pot challenger # 10
