There are plenty of jobs out there!

Ive just been watching the News at 6, BBC1 and on it was a story about illegal immigrants living in garages and sheds in London and being charged £500-£600 pounds per month for the priviledge of doing so.Anyway, it was mentioned that the recession was so bad that many people were now going back to their own countries because they couldnt get any work at all even when working for very little! Thats how bad it is.
Everything I've gone for has had around 100 applicants! not 28! and the minimum wage jobs have 100s. I dont think people really understand how bad it is unless they are looking themselves. I knew it was bad workwize before I lost my job,but I never realized it was like this.
I think really people have to accept the reality of the situation and that they may be in for a long jobsearch.. or never get a paid job again.
I dont see how everyone moving about will solve anything because they will then have to compete with all the people from that area. There are also no jobs in Supermarkets or shops round here, nothing.0 -

Really sorry to hear that, and you are right - on the small scale it's fine to say 'look further afield', i.e from a town to a city or more populated area. But of course the competition will be even higher.0 -

I agree until you are in this predicament you don't really know what its like, as you say there aren't even jobs in supermarkets or shops, the only option I can see is self employment though its a route I can't really be bothered with but the reality is unless something drastically changes I may be out of work a hell of a long time.0 -

I did some market research this afternoon, a mate had recommended me and it was £40.00 for 45 minutes, which is o.k.!!
Anyway,I had to look at these websites to do with care, e.g. grab rails, lunch clubs, bath aids etc and domestic services. One of the things that shocked me was how much these companies were charging. A handyman service was £18.00 per hour and domestic cleaning was £12.00 per hour. What a rip off. I think perhaps some self employment along these lines might be worth persuing.
I personally would never pay these prices, and I dont think a lot of other people would either.0 -
I'm sorry but I'm not following you here - I didn't say you were stupid, I wouldn't presume anyone was stupid unless they post a lot of stupid things.
You seem to be saying that compassion and facts are mutually exclusive - by all means tell it like it is (I think that's why 99% of people are here - for real advice) but it costs people nothing to throw in a bit of sympathy with their advice. Conversely, sympathy by itself is nice, but unhelpful.
I'm sorry but I can't really hold it against someone if they scoff at working for £2.60 an hour when the minimum wage is £6.08 an hour. You have to ask yourself - would you?
Yes I realise you have given her links which is very helpful, I've not critisized that at all, however, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought her point was that finding a vacancy is not the same as actually getting the job, which I agree with, and was a post I made a while back.
I'm spending a hell of a lot of time looking for jobs, and have been since Semptember, and nothing has come good as of yet. I know what I need to do (keep looking), I interview well and there are plenty of jobs I'm qualified (and some that I'm overqualified) for. The main reason I was posting was to reiterate the fact that it is by no means easy actually securing a job at the moment.
Sorry this was a general comment, do you want to tell me your qualifications? at the end of the day you are annonymus but maybe I can help with a few job links, also your area or looking and how far you will go.All the big powers they've silenced me. The jobcentre always say you must look for work in other areas, but other people will be too and all the people that live in that area.:footie:0

Because it is just a case of packing a suitcase and off you go!
How do you travel there?
Where do you live?
Where do you get the money from for travel costs, accommodation deposits, rent in advance, rent until you eventually manage to get a job. Living expenses. Moving all of your belongings?
All of that just on the off chance that you may be more likely to get a job? Some people really need to get a reality check!
Another post arguing against a strawman.
Of course you don't move to a random city to go job hunting. That is clearly ridiculous. Noone has suggested that on this thread, yet at least three posters so far have lambasted it.
Get a job offer, then relocate.
It is a case of packing a suitcase and off you go. Pack a suitcase, find a family to live with and become a lodger for a few days/weeks. Medium term, look for somewhere to rent, longer term, move the family over if that is viable.
If you have no money then you are screwed. Yes, thanks for pointing that out. Having no money is not directly related to being unemployed.
If during periods of employment you are not saving for the bad times, you are setting yourself up to fail. If you also go out, get an expensive mortgage, a car on lease and give yourself various other commitments then you will be truly up the creek when things go downhill. Rational people expect to be made unemployed at some point in the future. I don't think I'm going to be employed for 40 years continuously, so why would I leave just a few months' expenses in the bank for a rainy day?Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
Said Diogenes, “Learn to live on lentils and you will not have to be subservient to the king.”0 -

One of my mates was a builder, and has come across this a few times in the past couple of years. People who seem perfectly happy when he is doing the job, then try to haggle with the price afterwards (having agreed his quotation), or make up some reason why they are not happy with the work.
I did a job on a mates car last year when I was unemployed (and not receiving any benefits - 53, married, mortgage, been working for 33 years - no benefits!), and I saved him a couple of hundred quid, and made a ton for myself. He watched me doing the job, and at the end of the day, when I was filthy dirty, and had bruised knuckles, he looked at me and said - "That was an easy £100 for you wasn't it?".:(
I just gave him one of those looks, and he paid up;)0
