I am not looking for local work dear - I will travel up to 30 miles in both directions. Into Essex and as far as Ealing Broadway on the other side of Lndon. I have never said or have even been looking for loval work where I can walk!!

I haven't read all this thread and I certainly would not say that there are loads of jobs about, however;
My 17 year old daughter was getting very cheeky stating she needed more allowance than she was getting and couldn't get a part time job and why should she do something she didn't want to do in her spare time (currently studying for a levels)
As a hardworking Mum with a job I was annoyed to put it mildly! After a bit of an arguement I got DD in the car with a hastily written CV (no employment experience at all) and I drove her to every pub, restaurant, bar etc in the area. Within two hours she had a part time waitressing job. She hates it but goes with a smile on her face and yes she earns the minimum wage but she is earning and she now realises that if you want things you have to work for them.
She now has experience so if she is hard up at Uni she can get a part time job, she will have a reference and a positive approach which is the most important thing. We live in an area of low salary and high unemployment, but even here there are jobs.
My media studies, graduate, nephew aged 23 has never had a job. He is waiting for the perfect thing, whilst living off his parents who go to work everyday. He refuses to take a minimum wage type job, even in a company were graduates may have the opportunity to work their way up, as he sees this as beneath him.
The economy is in a mess, but what is new, I grew up in the 80's so know all about YTS schemes, etc and I'm proud to say that despite being made redundant I have never been out of work for longer than one week.
Work is out there but you have to look for it and be flexible! Rant over0 -

It is really very difficult to relocate for work. Personally I am willing to travel any distance as long as the time and cost of travel don't offset the benefits of the job, and I think that is reasonable. I was offered one job that I would have relocated for, but as it was classed as an apprenticeship it was on that pay scale, and as such I would have been making a financial loss by taking it up, whether I commuted or relocated. How can that ever work? I'd have to take up a second job, which is really my last consideration after having done similar with studies/constant part time work since I was at college (which went on for 7 years).
I'm unlucky in that where I live with my parents is a relatively out of the way area, as such any reasonable chance of a job lies at least 15 miles away (job situation in my town is utterly dire).
Not to mention the start up costs of relocation - I don't see how I can afford to relocate until I'm earning.0 -

Although I'm in the same boat and I'm taking the approach that I will do anything, rather than anything beneath me. However I don't blame him - by and large, people that go to university have a very tough time. I know this from personal experience, and additionally one of my previous part-time jobs was working with students and looking after their welfare. I was surprised to see that many of them had two or three part time jobs a week and only just managed to cover their costs.
On top of this they have to work towards their degree. Not saying people with a degree are better than anyone else, but the majority will have been through incredibly tough times to specialise in a certain area. I don't think it's completely unreasonable for someone to then be a bit picky about what work they do - if they can afford to. I personally can't and must take the first thing I can find.0 -
its fair enough if you are young and cant afford it. There is a great apprenticeship in Carlisle for Eddie Stobart. its 90 quid per week but you have to live up there, fine you cant if you live elsewhere its not possible. But if you are single and have qualifications you can, you can search for cheap places to stay and there are places that you can find that would be ok for a few months until you found your feet, you could even find a house share. There are no excuses if you are single and have qualifications and there are job offers/oppertunities elsewhere in the country.
You cant say, Im not moving because ill miss my family and I will die alone. This is defeatist and an excuse to use when infact you dont want work but portray the fact that you do.All the big powers they've silenced me. Was that to me or the other person? If it was, that wasn't my point. I don't disagree with the first paragraph at all.
I didn't say anything of the kind in respect to your second paragraph. But as you mention it, I think that is a valid reason.
People can both want to work and not be away from those they love. There are a whole myriad of reasons in between (I have a friend that can't work far away from home because she is disabled, and relies largely on her family providing care for her in her personal life (and indeed some aspects of her working life, such as transport). Some people may find themselves alone when working away and become depressed or such. Personally, no I wouldn't find this happening to me - but others perhaps. Of course it is unrealistic to find the job of your dreams on your doorstep, but just because someone is unwilling to relocate doesn't mean they are unwilling to work.0 -

thats true what you say but these people have said they sit on computers 18 hours per day searching for work but cannot find any. sure they cant they wont move more than 20 miles from their homes. I have a golfing buddy who works in london 300 miles away, he goes Sunday comes home Friday, has wife and kids to provide for. So if you are willing to move there are jobs out there. Ive found several positions that im sure LadyMissA could apply for if willing to leave homeAll the big powers they've silenced me.
