I think when you plant garlic, you plant a whole clove. Maybe the biggest one from the garlic bulb.Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.0 -
You buy a complete bulb then break it into the segments. Plant the biggest ones, I've found it's not worth it to plant the smaller onesFreedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Hi
The bigger cloves provide bigger bulbs.
Garlic needs cold weather or it refuses to split into cloves and you just get one giant clove, which is a waste unless you want to cook with a LOT of garlic at one time.
So get it outside ASAP. Some of mine went in last autumn and is about 4 inches high at the moment. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Hi all
Sorry, can garlic be planted in pots,or does it have to go in the ground?
Thanks0 -
Mine's in a big pot outside, well in an old drawer of a chest of draws really.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

Mine went in in October......
The shoots are around 4"-6", Not sure when to harvest though. It said somewhere on a website, after about four months, when the outside of the shoots start going brown and drooping but the inside part is still green.
Is this right? To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -

if you plant garlic from the supermarket you might be disappointed, seed garlic from a garden center is a better idea, but be careful it spread like a weed if you're not careful!

I've planted seed from a oriental supermarket this year, because of several reasons. Tried the proper seed before and I found it no better than very good (notice the "very good") cloves from fresh places locally.s4aRainyDay wrote: »if you plant garlic from the supermarket you might be disappointed, seed garlic from a garden center is a better idea, but be careful it spread like a weed if you're not careful!
As to the "it might spread like a weed" thang, I will treat that with the disdain that it deserves.
Treat mint like that, not garlic.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0
