quick question about garlic (MERGED)

  • Seemingly (all good advice above) garlic likes a period of <10oc to make it grow well, hence planting it in the back end of the year.

Lots of folk traditionally plant it on boxing day - maybe as a last ditch attempt?!

My shallots have started sprouting too, so have taken a few into greenhoose and trying them as 'winter spring onions' not sure if it will work, but you never know xx
Total debt 26/4/18 <£1925 we were getting there.

  • Ah my garlic is currently in a bag in the fridge (the ones I am going to grow) to give them some <10oc time, we live on an island and although the wind blows like stink, it doesnt often get very cold, so I cheat.

I have also grown, 'proper shop bought' growing garlic (very expensive) and 'shop bought' co-op bog standard cooking garlic off the shelf in supermarket (cheap as chips) and to be honest had similar results with both, but it might be cos we are very far north and maybe garlic isnt terribly suited to the climate here - but we soldier on!!

  • Hello everyone!
I've got some winter garlic bulbs that should have gone in last November, does anyone know if I can still put them in or should I just put new spring bulbs in? I've never grown garlic before and we eat loads so some how or other I've got to get some in !!

Better late than never, now is a bit late but as they need a cold spell to "clove" [if there is such a word] this weather would seem perfect

Spring bulbs I do not understand TBH, garlic is garlic, unless you are referring to so called "Elephant garlic" which is not strictly garlic

As you love it so, keep your eyes open for garlic chive seeds, grows like chives, but tastes of garlic not onions
    Numerus non sum
  • Thanks Farway, I've never heard of garlic chive will definately keep my eyes open.

The bulbs I have are the 'over wintering' bulbs that go in the ground before winter apparently and I guess you're right this cold spell should do it's stuff for them anyway. What I meant by spring bulbs was the normal garlic bulb that you would put in in March.

Does anyone know where I could buy garlic to grow?

We eat tons of the stuff and to be able to grow it would be just wonderful!

    Many thanks.

A nursery, garden centre, google 'garlic suppliers', ebay???

It really needed to go in before the winter, but if you get some in now it will grow - it just may not split into cloves.

i read a piece in the paper that said this is the last chance to put garlic in as it apparently needs 30days of cold to grow properly, mind you i would need a snow shovel and a chisel to plant anything just now!......

i am experimenting with some supermarket garlic which i put in at Halloween (just bought the ordinary bulbs and divided them into cloves) i then read that a lot of shop garlic is grown abroad and its too cold for it here but i have to say my experimental patch is showing an inch of growth so i am hopeful! :j

Wilkinsons if you've got one close are doing them cheap. Also hiomebase, B&Q, and everywhere that sells anything even vaguely garden-ish. Buy it and get it in the ground as soon as you can, hopefully this cold snap will trigger it to clove properly.
