quick question about garlic (MERGED)

Garlic really needs to be outside - mainly because it is the cold that causes the clove to split into more cloves.

If you can, put a few in pots outside now, it will come up and be ready around august time [but of course it depends on the weather]. Or if that windowbox is outside, it should be fine.

If it traditional to plant garlic on midwinter's day ready for a harvest on midsummer's day. But you can plant it anytime really, it just needs a good amount of time to grow.

have had mine outside in pots since oct/nov time, they have nice big green shoots sticking out the top now, im not sure if its too late for planting it now

hi i tried garlic last year and nothing happened so on sunday i popped some cloves into pots. thought i'd see if it sprouted before i let it move up to the veggie plot. Fingers crossed, i'd really love to grow some garlic. my dad managed it by accident one year and i've wondered why i keep failing ever since.

I have grown garlic for years and years. It is a really easy and profitable crop to grow. It is best if it is planted in the autumn.

What I do is that every year when I am digging the vegetable plot in the spring I find garlic sprouting from last year's bulbs which I missed when I was digging the plot in the autumn.

I just separate these bulbs into individual cloves and plant those, they grow really well.

I put some garlic in some flower pots in June last year, just to see what would happen.They have been outside forgotton about, until a couple of weeks ago,when shoots started to appear.They are about eight inches high now.Trouble is I don't know when you harvest.Any advice.

Garlic needs planting in the autumn because it needs exposure to real cold as somebody mentioned. I understood the cold helped it produce bigger bulbs. If you are this late I would stick it outside in a pot in the next few days with minimal compost cover and then plant it properly after the frosts.

Do we get british garlic in supermarkets though? will it look and smell like wild garlic?

Thanks for the advice, I put 10 cloves in a window box and 8 have come through, hopefully now we're experiencing some frosty nights they might split. Hope to be harvesting in August then. Thanks again. SG
