  • You could do but most shop bought bulbs are raised in sunnier climbs such as spain so may ot do to well.

I got some from the garden centre today, but the Garlic Farm is one of the best sellers online if your has none!

  • They are a bit pricey but very good I hear.

I got my from a centre that is part of Wyevale's there garlic was £1.99 for a pack of 3 bulbs, but look at it this way once they are in you can save a few over each year and replant them for free!!! so the initial outlay is quite good if you use it a lot like me!
  • tbh, this is the first year that I have bought my garlic - and only because I saw some on special offer :D

I have planted 'supermarket' garlic for years, with good success. sometimes the bulbs can be on the small size (other years they have been huge), but they have always worked. If you plant supermarket cloves, only plant large cloves - there is no point at all planting each and every clove, the small ones give a very poor yield.

Check out Wilkinsons have three bulbs for £1
  • Home Bargains had garlic in at 79p (I think). They also had in onion and shallots at the same price.

to clarify... I always overwintered (planted nov/dec) the 'supermarket' bulbs. I have never tried planting them in jan/feb...yet!
  • Hi

Last year I was given a bulb of garlic so I split it into cloves and planted it. However when I came to harvest it I was very disappopinted. Bulbs had formed but they were tiny. Yesterday I spotted a pack in Asda so I bought it. Now my gardening books say that you split the bulb and plant the sep cloves, the instructions with the pack from Asda doesn't say that, it gives the impression that you plant the whole bulbs and says that when the leaves turn brown lift the clusters and separate and set out to dry. So I am wondering if these like onion sets have been part grown and then lifted.

    Can someone advise please?

    Many thanks
    Anne
  • I read that you should really only plant the largest cloves as they produce the largest crop, they also need a fair bit of drainage and according to the woman who did "grow your own veg" she put some course sand into the hole first to improve drainge. Also plant the cloves about 2 inches down and 4 inches apart. I also believe that they do have to be lifted the same way as onions and allowed to dry, especially before storing (unless I heard that wrong...kids were jabbering in the background while I was watching)
