I was somewhat shocked to see SD was leaving us yesterday, what a shame. While I don't know the circumstances behind it other than he no longer found the MFW approach worthwhile, I can't help but feel that MFW is ideally suited to people at the start of their working lives. Granted, I find this lark boring as hell at times, but I can also see how sensible decisions made at an early juncture will set us up for the rest of our lives. It must be harder to see the light when you're already 50+, with a mad dash to the finish, as opposed to a disciplined marathon in support of the future.
    I too will miss SD:(

    Just you left Ed :T.

I think it's easier when you're 50+ as the end is in sight (well, a tiny pin !!!!! ;)). The thought of doing Tilly Tidies for 20+ years would probably finish me off :rotfl:. However, SD needs to do what's right for him and he has enough on his plate without bothering about BOGOF's. I'm sure he's benefited from being here - if only in reassessing what is important to him at the moment.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I too was shocked by this, but I actually think it's easier as a short mad dash. It's a finite amount of time to think of.

I'm pretty much at the start of the journey, but what keeps me going is that I know I will be moving house, and the only way to afford the 'forever' home is to tackle this head on.

However, I do think at the start of the forever home with another 25 years, I may decide that it's not worth it.

Definitely brings your priorities into sharp relief though

Agreed, finite amount of time, but too many habits to change, too much effort compressed into a short space of time. It's like ERE - impossible unless you happen to be childless and single - or with a partner who is also 100% supportive of the plan.

Was off work yesterday, it feels like someone is clutching a fist inside my abdomen and my stomach is clearly trying to kill me  Oddly enough, a 5k run was the only thing that made the pain recede at all...

Made it in today, I suppose I can job hunt :p Several meetings cancelled, I'm not rushing to re-schedule them.

I know I didn't know him much, and he certainly didn't know me, I was just a silent lurker on his thread, but I was really shocked when I read his post too.

Stomach pain sounds  I hope it's better now?!
  • Hope you are feeling better Ed.

    Still feeling blech.

Work looks to be going tits up. New manager is going off to do something else, some of his duties are being passed to a colleague who is a consumate brown nose but appears to do about as much as me. Said individual is supposed to be part of my 'team' and is meant to be working on all things MI. So apparently I'm now the only person doing anything to do with MI for a multi-million pound organisation (and I suck at it)

Like the new line in your sig Cal :money:
  • Hi Mr E, not sure what to say but hope a) you feel better quickly and b) something positive happens with work

I'll echo Tilly, hope things brighten up soon.
a penny picker upper. MFW approx 78% to go | FIRE 3 years worth (30% savings rate: now aiming for 40%!) | Normality is a paved road; it's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it | Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible | The only thing you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library

also sad to see sd go, i read his diary a lot.
For me I find i need to balance. I don't think I could go without everything for the next x years and keep motivated. Slow and steady and although a few more years to get to the end :)
