Re: big pots. I fill the bottom half of these with those blocks of white polystyrene, randomly chucked in, the kind you get round new stuff (remember new stuff?! Me neither!), the chunkier the better (the skinny stuff does tend to break up into irritating little pieces) . It's inert, light, and takes up the room much cheaper than loads of potting compost. Suppose it does a bit of insulating, too. You could always put them mainly round the sides so any tap-rooted type of plant would still have plenty of room to grow down into. Hope this makes sense, think I need more coffee.... x

I use plastic bottles in the bottom of larger pots, works pretty much the same way as you are suggesting. I can't say that it has made this new pot any lighter, it is mighty big!

It is now full of highly scented pinks and a deeply perfumed rose, it already looks lovely.

I think karma came and got the hellcow yesterday.

All the tills went down and despite me telling her what the problem was, network down - tills acting as stand alones, she refused to pass the information on to the relevant IT people. Thus making the job more complex and far more drawn out than it needed to be. I'm not so sure she was doing the big 'I am' at nine o'clock last night when she was still stuck in the shop waiting for the fix and to be able to cash up....

Shame. I had a nice glass of wine going by then....I'd met a friend after my shift and we had a lovely catch up and giggle. I spent £10 but don't feel guilty about it as I rarely go out, let alone spend money :o

One gardening job done today, mainly pruning and weeding, didn't take too long. This meant I was able to pick up some compost and some pinks for my blind lady [and some pinks for me too :D] Also picked up some jewel coloured miniature petunias for another client for his hanging baskets, will be reimbursed for them.

Tonight I'm making a butternut squash, feta and black olive salad for tea, it will be accompanied by a glass of red and a film. I'm looking forward to a long sit down.

The weather is cool and cloudy, much like yesterday. I'm not sure where the sun went but it hasn't made an appearance :(

Not a lot to report on :( I met mum and dad for breakfast yesterday. After some research discovered that the croissant I had been refusing in order to have the healthy more slimming muesli yogurt actually had less calories  Naturally, I thought it's Sunday I'm having the croissant then!

I finished a pot I had been asked to do but hadn't got round to because of the good weather :o just shows a little more discipline is needed:) However, it does look lovely, I just hope the recipient thinks so too.

No other news that isn't the most boring drivel you've ever come across on these boards I'm afraid. I'll be off to get ready for the coffee shop shift then....

    Hi Piq, :hello:

Were you allowed butter on your croissant, or did that send the calorie value higher than the yoghurt?

I found a variant on your 'shopping bag planters' idea which seems to work, except it's not mobile: Cut tops and bottoms off 5lt water bottles then put them into the garden with about an inch protruding from the soil. Filled with potting mix, they're easy to water without waste and the tomatoes are growing almost as I watch; am chuffed. :D

Hope your shift goes well today.. ;)

(Delurks) Hello everyone! Piq, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your diary, and the adventures of you, the Captain, the Bear (run free at the bridge Bear xxx), and Colin. Yes, I have read all 221 pages and am considered weird by certain people!

I think I have the canine equivalent of Colin - a two year old spaniel affectionately known as the Moose, who will and frequently does eat every thing except lettuce and peach :) . I used to ride, I started at the age of three, (more years ago than I care to remember) but some hip problems have stopped me getting on a horse recently. I'm not sure how the Captain would treat me :). I used to be one of those teenagers who would groom for an hours ride, but after I hadn't ridden for six months despite going to the yard both on a Saturday and Sunday, I wised up. The resulting phone call when I didn't turn up as expected one day was highly amusing :) .

Could I make a suggestion for you when the colder weather hits? One of your marvellous decorated pots, filled with homemade biscotti (or another treat, I'm not fussy) I'd love to be able to give some as presents, and would love to receive them even more.
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!
