  • Oh no :( stay safe and try and keep dry the two of you.

I'm in work late today. have a meeting until 8.30pm so didn't come in until just before 12. I've no doubt people will have commented on it but I don't get paid enough to do a 12 hour shift and I don't get overtime so I've come in late.

Things to do before my 4 and a half hour meeting (with one 15 minute break planned...lovely!) so stay safe everyone.

  • You can buy sandbags from diy stores sometimes. Apparently plasticine is good for covering gaps/air bricks etc in floods. There was an article on BBC? website yesterday. Chap rolled out small sheet of the stuff and pressed over air bricks.

Would recommend checking out Environment Agency website for info on flood preparation. Have a small bag packed, put important docs and valuables upstairs. Keep a small stash of tinned food and bottled water somewhere out of water's reach.
Make sure grates are clear of leaves and mud - amazing how leaves can create a dam and stop wwater from draining away.
Have you signed up for Floodline? It's free and they sent phone/text messages if you're at risk.

So glad to read you're safe so far and how rude of the council not to think that Colin being in shock doesn't count lol.

The rain has stopped up here but we've found a lovely damp wall in the spare bedroom of the place we've just moved in to, luckily it's a rental so we don't have to fork out for it but still a pain in the ar*e.

    Stay safe and dry

A lot of the water has drained away, though the ground is sodden and the water in the ditches are level with the ground. I still have a partial moat, but it's not so worrying now.

One of the funniest sights was colin teetering on top the gate, trying to work out how he was going to get down as his preferred route was under water, no clear way to the hedgehog garden :(.

Had to go on a rescue mission with a friend to get the horses in, they were standing to their knees in water with all the grass under water. The Captain is much happier in his dry stable with his hay. The rain was so heavy last night it had permeated his outdoor rug, he was cold and wet underneath.

All I've bought today are carrots for the Captain and some milk.

Outstanding £bay person finally paid up meaning I have £48 in my P@ypal account. I have one bid of 99p on another item.

I think there is more rain forecast, but not as bad as last night. I've had to pop the heating on early as the house feels cold and damp, a pain as I'm trying to cut the heating as much as possible.

It would take a long time to get Colin's emergency stash of food upstairs....

Thanks for the info Ally, you know a lot about flooding, has it happened to you before?

A damp wall is not funny, it can make the whole house feel damp and cold and isn't good for you if you're prone to chest infections.

Will the Landlord sort it out for you?

That sounds very sensible, if you're not paid for it, you shouldn't have to work the extra hours.

Hope the meeting is not too onerous.

Poor Colin!! The Striped Person is mainly living in the airing cupboard at the moment, so our clean washing is also getting 'franked'.
Glad to hear the water has receded ..... have you thought of getting a dehumidifier? I read about them on the forum (where else?!) and managed to buy one on Ebay for £30. It's brilliant - we only heat one room with a woodburner, and I move the dehumidifier around the others - it sucks lots of water out of the atmosphere, makes the unheated rooms feel much nicer and warmer, and also helps the washing dry. It costs much less to run than any heating appliance, so I'm delighted with it. Damp + cold is horrible, dry + cold is much easier to live with.

I did think about suggesting you stirred a tin of catfood into the water and let Colin loose. He'd have lapped it up in no time :D.
