Hyundai i30 2011 - Pros and cons

We are considering buying the above car at a price of £7500-£8000.

We were hoping that other posters could provide their opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of this model, hyundai in general and, in particular, how comprehensive the 5 year warranty actually is as this is the main attraction to us.

Thanks

My wife has an 09 1.4 petrol, she has had it 8 months and loves it, we had one problem with the ignition barrel, when you took the key out it wouldnt then lock the car remotely but it was put right under warranty, in fact I found out it was a recall so should have been done before we bought it, so worth asking if you find one you like

It has done 22000, if you are looking for a petrol then the 1.4 is a great engine, better than the 1.6 by all accounts

weve got a 2010 i30 diesel - doesnt do as many miles as advertised - (we were getting about 60 urban and up to 68 on long journeys in a Renault megane but only about 50 urban in the i30) - but that apart we like the car.
    ..
  • Thanks for both your replies.

Photome - do you know how many MPG you get with your 1.4 and is it the same as originally advertised.

Also, how did you find dealing with Hyundia regarding your warranty?

I don't own the i30, but I have dealt with Hyundai in the past. I found that they were very keen to replace one or expensive parts that I simply complained didn't "feel" right, as opposed to actually failing.

They may have changed as they're now much more established than in the early 2000s, but my experience was that they were much above average.

Same as our Kia Ceed (same car), never much more than 50mpg which was a bit disappointing.

I have a 1.6 2011 automatic i30, and it does what it says on the tin. Of course, I don't get anywhere near the claimed MPG, but that is the result of unrealistic figures insisted upon by the EU regulations. Honest John has a web page devoted to true MPG figures and explaining how the 'official' ones are arrived at. IMHO the i30 is as good as a Ford Focus and has a much longer warranty, generally more equipment, at a more competitive price. The residues won't be as good as a Focus, but as you will pay less for it in the first place that won't matter. There are some crcking deals out there for new i30s at the moment because a replacement is due soom.

Presumably it's better to replace items BEFORE they fail? :rotfl:

    See I don't think that's right.

I bought a three year old Focus 1.6 for £3500, with 70,000 miles. I have not seen an i30 that cheap yet, and the i30 is a cheaper car to begin with -- TBH I've not seen one retailing for less than five grand at that age.

Indeed, but you try getting a Ford dealer to do that under warranty.

The i30 is just about to be replaced by a newer model, so new ones are massively discounted at present-you should be able to get at least 30% off a new one. And resale values should plummet accordingly.
The problem with Huyndai's (for a new buyer) are the poor residual values, so don't pay over the odds for a second hand one.
