wait for the DLM training period to end, then investigate. Even if it's wifi interference from a neighbor's router, changing yours will require router reboots which should be avoided during line training. May not be instant, but will give better overall results in the long run :)

Yes, of course, you're right. I have to wait till the end of the training period.

I checked with inSSIDer and there are no other routers showing in the vicinity

admin and sky are the defaults to access the router settings (the bit where you type in 192.168 etc )
You type in the originals as given then you can change the password if you want to.

On my new n dongle,I went into network and sharing settings in control panel and clicked on connections then it is in wireless properties, security and there is a box called encryptions, you can choose AES or TKIP but TKIP only gives 54mbps,AES will be more ,mine reaches 144.5 when I check it with the utility that came with the dongle.

    Thanks for the info.

I have just checked and mine is already set at AES. However I was only showing 26Mbps, which dropped to 19.5, up to 39 and the highest I have seen it is 54.5Mbps. It is definitely an N dongle.

you could check in the router settings also as it can be set to b/g or b/g/n I think.
Mine was already set as b/g/n IIRC
my lappy already had wireless and was running using the old wireless card which is g and I actually had to disable it in network settings to stop it from starting as the default wifi connection.

One laptop is set at 802.11 a. There is a b/g option, but no n option. Should I set it to the b/g option?

I have set the other one to 11n.

On the desktop I have Ad hoc Support 802.11n which was disabled. I enabled it and my speed dropped from 54bps to 5.5Mbps so I disabled it again.

Is it OK to change these settings while I am in the training period?

I can't find any mention of b/g/n in the router settings. Can you tell me how to find it?

changing settings on your pc's wifi cards has NO EFFECT on your router or it's training period. It's good that you have no routers close that are interfering, but may I suggest that you put inssider on a laptop and check throughout your house as you may pick up others while you're upstairs. For example, if I run it on my desktop in the same room as the router, I pick up mine and next door's wifi. If I run it on mini-Gun #1's lappy in his bedroom top floor of 3-storey house) I can get 11 or 12 different routers when they're all on :( So do check, as it will inform your choice of wifi channel better than just in one room.

One thing though, you may find you get better wifi performance by having ALL the wifi cards set for G (if that's the highest that they can ALL operate on, and then setting your router for G-only operation (after the training period, of course, as you'll probably have to reboot it after making the change.). This will effectively stop the router having to swap it's operation between G and N, and may give you close to 54Meg to all the devices.

    Thanks.

I just tried inSSIDer again and a BT Home Hub appeared briefly on Channel 11 then disappeared. I'm on Channel 6.

I'm the only one who uses a pc regularly and that is the desktop. The OH uses the laptop occasionally, and only for a few minutes at the time, always in the same room as the desktop. The other laptop is only used when we are travelling and is only turned on at home when there are any updates to download.

I take it that if it's only the desktop that is used regularly and that has an N dongle that I am OK to leave the router set to N.

I wish I knew which speed tester was the most accurate as I am getting widely varying speeds using different ones. I have been using the BT beta one as well as Think Broadband and occasionally Speedtest.net.

My speed is atrocious at the moment

  • Go to your router on 192.168.0.1 and click maintenance at the top and login with your login details, if you've not changed this it will be admin & password then click on show statistics which is at the bottom of the screen.

This will show your router stats and post up the details, even though you're still in dlm it will be interesting to see the stats:)
