I am not complaining, I am just stating 7 days is a bit too soon for those who work full time so do hope RM will hold on to it a little longer than 7 days to give my recipient a chance to collect from DO.

you know RM staff work FT too
it was a line often trotted out
if you cant collect an item in 7 days then don't order an item with RD postage
or get it sent to a PO
or get it redelivered to a workplace/neighbour

RM are extending retention to 18 days, but cutting others which have 21 days
no doubt there will be complaints about that too
folks would have RM keep items for months if they could
RD is a legacy product really. they should be replacing it,not extending the retention

The retention period changed to 18 days on 9th January this year. I'm struggling to find a link to this online, however if anybody has a red 'while you were out' card you will see that the details have been changed on there to reflect this.

I work full time and have no problem collecting any parcels within 7 days but I can understand not everyone can collect their mail within 7 days. I usually collect within 2 days or arrange a redelivery. However some people do work 7am-7pm seven days a week such as my recipient so would not be home for the delivery or be able to collect the parcel. I took the chance thinking someone else may have been home to receive it and if no one else can collect for him or be home when another delivery then it looks like it will be returned to me. That is not a 'complaint' but I am just stating why I think 7 days is too soon for some people. RD is just standard mail that requires a signature so don't understand how standard 1st and 2nd class can be held for longer.

How long will the Post Office® or delivery office retain the item?
From Monday 9th January 2012, we will retain all items for a period of 18 calendar days from the attempted delivery date. If an item has not been collected, or if we have not received a re-delivery request by this time, we will return to it to the sender.

I understand your point to a certain degree, but if somebody works those hours every single day, then it wouldn't make a difference if the item was held for 1 week, 3 weeks, or even 3 months - if he's working every day then he will never be able to collect it.

There are other options available such as redelivery to a different address in the same postcode area, or even arranging redelivery for a day when somebody else is available at his address if he doesn't live alone.

He does not work every Saturday, it just depends on how much work is on and if he didn't get the job done on the friday.

Nevermind, the link I posted above has cleared things up and I'm sure he or someone else will be able to collect within 18 days.

    as i already said
its original purpose was for the ilkes of legal notifications
    hence the 7 day retention
fairly standard for many years as a period of notice before further action

We are not talking about when the original purpose was, we are talking about what is is now. Since parcels can be sent RD then there should be no reason why the DO can hold on to the parcels for the same length of time as standard 1st and 2nd class.

It has all changed now anyways and as stated in the above link, all items will be held for 18 days.

sigh, you asked why it was treated differently from 1st & 2nd class mail
    I answered that question
the change in its use, is the reason for the change in retention
honestly I wonder why folks ask a question since they already know the answers.........
