Has your buyer informed you of the non delivery? If so I would contact the Delivery Office where the parcel is being held at and see what is happening.

It has been quite a while since I have used Recorded Delivery But on Monday I posted a parcel 1st class recorded (not an eBay item).

The tracking updated to say the parcel was accepted at xxxx Post Office Time/Date.

The following day (yesterday) it updated with 'We tried to deliver your item on 14th Feb at 12pm and have left a while you were out card'.

I have just tracked it again today and it now states:

We have tried to deliver your item from our xxx Delivery Office before 09:22 on 15/02/12 and we have left a while you were out card.
You can arrange a redelivery online, call the number on your card to arrange a re-delivery, or collect the item from your local enquiry office by bringing your card and proof of identification and address.

Now does anyone know if this is a second delivery attempt? (I thought the recipient had to wait 48 hours for a redelivery) and how many more times Royal Mail will attempt a delivery (if the recipient arranges a redelivery and again is not home) before being returned to sender/me.

no. the item was scanned on the street on a PDA
when the item returned to the office it has to be scanned again to show it is now held at the office(this is really for internal tracking)
note the difference in 'at' and 'before'
RD are held for 7 days an should be held for 7 days inclusive of redelivery attempts
though in reality, most DOs will give longer

They're actually held for 18 days, not 7.

However, that isn't necessarily relevant here as the tracking details show that the item has been delivered, not that it is being held at the Delivery Office.

Sorry, scanned post quickly and didn't realise there was a second item being discussed in addition to the OP.

I was aware that RM hold Recorded Delivery for 7 days but unsure if this is 7 working days or 7 days from date of first attempted delivery.

Seven days just seems a bit too soon to be returned to sender since the recipient could be on holiday for two weeks so I do hope that the DO will hold on to it a bit longer.

    well its been changed now
however RD was never designed for packages etc
its purpose was really for documents
eg you issue notice to someone
if they dont get the item, you get it back and know to go to the next stage of proceedings
    as for going on holiday
    heard it many times
    thats why keepsafes are available
if folks dont bother with them, then thats a possibility

There could be many reasons the recipient could not collect their RD item within 7 days; holiday, working full time, hospital etc which is why I think 7 days is too soon to be returned to sender.

It should be held for at least 14 days IMO. You say it has been changed now but RM website still states RD will be held for 7 days. Is it now 18 days?

I am not complaining, I am just stating 7 days is a bit too soon for those who work full time so do hope RM will hold on to it a little longer than 7 days to give my recipient a chance to collect from DO.
