Lots of reasons as many people have mentioned. Some do it for suspicious reasons like they have a bad reputation etc. However, there are lots of genuine reasons for doing it. Many companies who are expanding their staff want to keep this fact away from business rivals. Also as others have mentioned sales people will target companies which are expanding and thus they can get pestered by sales people calling at their door and ringing them.

Yeah well thats what I always thought, to get people to actually apply, people are more likely to apply for something even if they don't know what it is than they are to apply for a meat or chicken factory.

What is the problem with a meat or chicken factory?

I've dug ditches, worked in !!!!ing rain and got soaked to the skin, worked in snow, i've never had a decent job, all have been crappy but nothing has ever been as horrible as working in a meat factory, I lasted 1 day and walked out.

I applied for a job before Christmas and it wasn't until I arrived for my interview that I realised that it was a Chicken factory. There was nothing in the job description on the Jobseeker Direct website to indicate that.

Some jobs need to be applied for using Job Centre application forms.

So, based on my experience, falko89 is basically right in what he says.
so you got an interview, got the address and name of the company and never did research as to who or what they did before you got there!!??

Just reminded me of a job I tried to apply for (from the jobcentre) in a local department store. I for a sales assistant, but what it didn't say was it was for the women's lingerie department. Didn't find that out until I saw the ad in shop window giving more details.

I might be that they ARE an agency. I've seen a few agencies that put ads through the Jobcenter as well as their own sites, especially if it's for high turnaround places like cleaners or shop workers.

Gets them more names for their clients with the jobcenter doing the initial weeding out of undesirable applicants! lol

Looking at the job centre there are a few. [...] why do they do this?
Usually because the company has a very bad reputation. Sometimes the Jobcentre does it as well, in order to boost their figures by preventing someone from applying directly.

Further to my previous post, the Jobcentre are terrible for not providing the location of a job as well. I hate their online search. I searched for within 5 or 10 miles of my home postcode and applied for one job that came up in the results and said the location was Manchester (which is where I live). When the company got back in touch with me it turned out they were in Carlisle! Erm, no ta... I don't understand why the Jobcentre do this as it wastes everyone's time. Does getting a certain number of applications through their site make them look good/hit some kind of target?

They could be vegetarian. Therefore having a moral problem with working in this sort of place.
  • It seems ridiculous to be expected to apply for jobs without knowing who the potential employer is. The employer wants to know all about the applicant before deciding whether or not to interview, and the applicant should know about the employer before deciding whether or not to apply. There are as many reason why one wouldn't want to work for certain employers as there are reasons why an employer wouldn't want to employ a certain person. Both parties have to make informed decisions.
