I normally just do gammon with an onion and some cloves and a bayleaf in the slow cooker. My kids LOVE it so theres rarely any leftovers;)

Ok, I got a piece of gammon in t'fridge that needs cooking tomorrow (best before 09/05/05
) but it's only a little piece @700g and not worth getting slow cooker out for.
It's unsmoked and no mention of soaking on label, just bake in oven, but I'd like to cook it in some apple juice I've got left over. What's best way to do it ... in a casserole in t'oven, bearing in mind I can make some cookies at same time, and should I soak it tonight or cook it as is?

Hi,
I've bought a huge pack of boiled ham and it's really salty.
Is there any way of desalting it?
If I soaked it in water overnight or something?
Or am I being silly?

Could you not take it back?
Otherwise, you could try soaking in water for a while, but this really needs to be done before the meat is cooked ...like gammon etc.
If you use in sarnies, you could add salad or pickle to cut through some of the salt.
Hope it works for you.

You can put it in boiling water for a few minutes. Is it really that salty, tho?? Could you not eat it with lots of veg in the sandwich, or use ti for a quiche??0

Soaking in water should help, change the water every half hour or so, if you can. Then add it to dishes where the other ingredients will absorb the salt (potatoes are good for this) or pasta - omitting salt from the recipe, obviously. Or a Pea and Ham soup ?All Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

Put in water and bring to the boil, simmer for 10 minutes then drain, and chuck water away, put fresh water in and cook for the allotted time, but add couple tablespoons sugar to the water, this should make the ham taste sweet and take away the saltiness. I always cook my hams this way and it works for me.0

I would also suggest cooking it with a potato to leach out some of the salt. (then check the spud as it may well be inedible)“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I've eaten some of it so I won't take it back.
It's very salty but not inedible - just wondered if there was a trick to lessen the salt.
I will cook with it to pad out the salt.....and may try boiling a bit.
