    i use the science method...
i think if you wear a big coat and just pants on your legs = your legs will be cold
so.. i wear light things on the top half of my body and wear on my legs, jeans.
my whole body is coldl but it all warms up after 5 mins
this has made my rheumatism in my knees less painful.
    try it and see..

OH makes me laugh - wanders round in shorts & a t-shirt all day (even in this weather) but sleeps under a 13-tog (feather) duvet at night, with a quilt on top as well in winter, with his teeth chattering. I have to have my own little duvet, 10.5 tog in winter & 7 in summer - or I'd boil. But I'm sitting here with 3 layers (incl. thermals & a very woolly jumper) on top & 2.5 on my legs (the .5 being a skirt) to his shorts & t-shirt!

ever since I had pneumonia at 36 I have felt the cold - I have actually sat on the beach in July wearing a fleece jacket! everyone else was in Tshirts etc!
The GOOD thing about it is that during heatwaves I actually feel comfortable! The BAD thing is that is doesnt happen very often!
so yes there is a blanket in the car (crotcheted of course) and I do make use of it! I dont drive though and not sure I could swaddled up the way I am!

As for the car, I assumed those that are really wrapping in a blanket are either parked or passengers. I would have thought a fleece blanket folded in quarters sat on a lap would be no problems for a driver. No worse than long skirts.
I am lucky, my car seat is heated. :p

    Lostinrates - SNAP!

If I'm driving in a long skirt I tuck it up under my bum to keep it out the way. I don't fancy the heel of my shoe getting caught in the hem or somesuch when I'm driving either.

In Ye Old Days people used to have special driving coats btw. If folk are getting cold in their cars, why not keep an extra fleece jacket in the car to wear, a longish one that goes down past the hips?

  • People at work were laughing at me yesterday when I told them I keep a blanket in the car boot when the weather is bad in case I get stuck somewhere/break down. Let 'em laugh. fingers crossed none of us ever do get stuck out in snow for hours in a broken down car with no heating (they couldn't seem to grasp that cars get extremely cold - one woman thought her heating would work even if the engine was off!) but if any of us do I'll be ok and they can freeze their butts off.

I happened to me on the phone Nd talking about this to my mother this morning who told me her granny used to wear her carriage driving apron in the motor car too.....and her car used to have a picnic basket on th eback, which was always packed with emergency supplies:D in case she met someone who was hungry or got peckish herself.

I magine a driving apron was somewhat combersome to drive a car in.

Fwiw, i am also a fan of driving shoes, though i am quite literally the oly person i know who wears them. It saves the heels and back of pretty shoes, they are soft and comfortable if before driving you are wearing heels, and they help keep the car clean. I just slip them on as i get in.

    Hi,
I had to laugh at this thread and add my bit as I thought I was the only one who probably did this. :D

I regularly sit watching tv with a fleece around me because I think if I can manage with that, then there is no point in wasting money having the heating on. (However, when kids are there, the heating is always on). That is a matter of course and has been like that for ages in my house. :) Hence gas dd now at £7 per month :D

However, bed time. I can definitely say I must be an old granny but I don't mind one bit.
I usually wear nightie or pjs, long 3/4 length cardy, socks and if its very cold, the hot water bottle goes in as well. Then ......... on top of the 13 tog duvet is a double sleeping bag, the bed throw and to top it off, my dressing gown gets slung on top :rotfl:

Im 45! omg, I can't believe I admitted to being grannyish but I hate being cold. :o

If my GF is out on a shift I turn the heating right off and wear a fleece dressing gown or a onesie in the house.

Apologies first to any old grannies!

I'm in my late 30's and in the cold weather I have got into the habit of keeping a rug in the car. When I do the morning school run (7.30 am) I jump into the car and put the blanket on my lap to keep me cosy and warm.

When I went out with DH in the car and put it on, and he gave me such a funny look - I didn't care because I was cold! But now whenever I pull it out he gives me that same pitying look

I had a friend up the other week and she saw my rug in the car and when I told her about my using it she was in hysterics and said I was like an old granny!

Is it really that bad? I didn't mind it before but now when I sit alongside cars in the traffic i'm starting to feel paranoid if I have it over my legs....

I'd say you were just being practical. If you ever break down on a cold night I bet any passengers will be begging to get under that blanket!

Speaking as a real granny, I remember when the tartan blankets were actually called 'car rugs'. Foolishly, we have one in the boot for impromptu picnics but I've never thought of using it to keep warm.:o

Personally, I wouldn't care what people think I'd say just keep warm. I went to football in 7 layers of jumpers under my coat on Tuesday night! I may have looked like Michelin man but at least I was warm!
