Debt free by 40?

  •:eek:Well, have been awol for a good while.
I've done the maths. If I were debt free, not including the mortgage, I would be £1200 A MONTH better off :eek:

What an eye opener. Am nearly finished for Christmas. Have looked out for bargains and haven't spent anywhere near as much this year (none on CCs).

Am in process of finding things to get rid of (£55 so far this week) and spent less than £60 on food shopping.

A few steps in the right direction but the serious stuff will start after Christmas. 40 is very fast approaching :(

  • Spent the afternoon with bank statements and a calculator. Need to change the way we bank so that OH especially knows which money he can touch and which he can't. There is a really helpful thread on the DW at the moment, so I think I'm going to do this.

Set up a new bank account (maybe the halifax to get the £5 reward account). Then I will transfer the non DD money into this account to cover food, petrol, clothes etc. Hopefully I can transfer a little of this money back into my single account for clothes/ haircuts. I've done the figures based on basic money, but with any extra mileage from OH, any extra hours, I should be able to make overpayments, although I would like to salt away a little of this for a holiday courtesy of the Sun holiday vouchers.

Sounds good in theory. Practice might be a bit different and I can't set it up until I get paid at the end of January.

first debt to overpay is a Santander card (Burtons) at £323. Highest APR.
Hoping this is gone by the beginning of March (fingers crossed)

Happy new year. This needs to be a MSE one!! So, 7 things listed on eBay to start with. All have free listing and 1 already has a bid even though they don't finish until Saturday. Aiming to have a big declutter but will do it step by step so I don't give up. Came home from last night with £20 left over so that will buy any fresh grocery stuff I need this week.

Having an eat as much as we can from cupboards and freezer month. Have found the grocery challenge- how inspiring and what an eye opener as this is where most of my unaccounted money goes.

Small steps but they are a start. OH completely on board now so no requests for takeaways hopefully:)

Have a good New Year's Day everyone x

    Hello Shelski, I didn't notice you re-appear :).

This sounds weird, but I think of you every month. Whenever I need to update the % paid off on my signature I can never remember how to do it, so I search your name on my diary and up pops your post where you gave me the formula :D.

Happy New Year and good luck with the debt-busting in 2013 x

    Hello
Just had a lively afternoon with old friends at my house. Used mostly left overs, just needed to buy some bread rolls as it was at my house, but saved in petrol money so swings and roundabouts.

eBay items - 4 have bids on, only initial ones but 3 days left yet and lots of watchers. 4 bags of clothes to the cash 4 clothes shop out of the loft £7.70. Just want my house decluttered, but is nice and tidy ATM.

Oh doing hm curry for tea.may take dog to park later but have promised myself will get at least 1 set of books marked and loaded into boot before I go to bed. I will NOT be working on Sunday!!!
    Have a good day everyone

Well, today has been very uneventful.
sent Dh shopping with a list and although I'll have to go out for some things that weren't on the shelves at Ald! tomorrow he did rather well.
Meal plan is done for the week. Just have to stick to it now, but really any other choice :(
Haven't marked any books (did 1.5 hours of ironing instead) but just finished working for today and all planning done for this week :):) Marking to be done tomorrow and Sunday OFF.
Ironing basket looking much better. Must keep it that way by doing some regularly and not just 'what we need for tomorrow'.
Going in search of hot chocolate and a biscuit. Have a good night x
