I think you are corect. Happen to a lot of companies try to grow too quickly. Also problem is the service is on O2 so any problem or network overload and O2 will sort its customers out first. This is true for all 3rd providers.

Maybe this is why service from the direct network is more expensive.

    Giffgaff is part of O2

But for those who are interested in where we have come from, we are a fully independent company but we are part of the overall Telefonica O2 family, and we run our service on the O2 network.

It seem the Telefonica have invested money in the Giffgaff but it need to run as a seperate company. At least unlikely to go under

A perfect example of this is New Year's eve, all the networks get slammed, o2 included, but my partner's o2 mobile still had network access whereas mine on giffgaff (although sat next to her) did not.
    ...

I find that hard to believe.

Believe it or not, it's true.
That's why not many O2 customers complaint.
Any overload or network problem, O2 will sort out its customers first and the 3rd part providers later.

All 3rd party providers have a limited bandwidth it's not a free run O2 network

Why do you think O2 can charge more direct?
