The Santander 123 is a good alternative (currently 3% AER, variable) for up to £20K. The interest rate is variable, and it costs £2/mth. Many people can get more in cashback than £2 a month. Look for the 123 threads for more info.

Thanks. Somebody mentioned that it might be possible to open more than one of these accounts. Do we have confirmation of that yet? If not, I'll have to telephone them tomorrow.

    innovate,

Thank you for your help. I can't open this account at the moment because I'm out of work but I hope that will change soon.

If you sign up to 123 accounts using a cashback like quidco or something along those lines, you get like £55 cashback, which covers more than 2 years worth of charges from them. Do that!

Does anyone know how many accounts you can open with them yet? I may give them a call tomorrow morning or pop down to branch.

I had a santander 123 account which I had converted from the old current account earlier this year and then I applied for another santander 123 account via quidco and managed to get that, so with a bit of jiggling of finances managed to set up 2 DDs per account and put in £500 per month and can put in savings of £20,000 into both.

I was looking for something to maintain my membership with the Skippy when a bond matures shortly and came acoss this, http://www.skipton.co.uk/savings_and_investments/savings_accounts/celebration_bond/
Yes I know it's only 2.25% gross but having maxed out Vantage and Santander and still having a bit of loose change to spare, it could help to fill a gap for a short time until the unlikely pospect that something slightly more appetising appears on the hoizon.

Good News: A bond paying 3.5%

Bad news: It means committing your money for SEVEN years with no early access. / closure.

Hard to think who this would appeal to. For many the thought that interest rates might exceed 3.5% in a few years time may put them off. For those wanting a guaranteed monthly income for several years the fact that the maximum deposit is £10,000 means that the maximum income would be £28.75 pm before tax as the rate for monthly interest is 3.45%. That is not going to help much.

They would have done a whole lot better making it a 5 year term.
Hard to see who`s going to be interested in it.
