When I was younger and clubbing 6 nights a week, I only ever wore black nail polish and none at home as my mother seemed to think black nail polish = Goth = heroin addict. *rolls eyes*

Earlier this year I decided to dress up more when I go out. I had gotten so into DIY mode that I lived in trackpants and tshirts and that's not me.

I've been practising painting my nails and now that I can make a reasonable job of it, I want to experiment :D I figure as y'all are addicts this is the place to come. ;)

So far, I've found one nail polish which I really love, a red called 'Apple' by Crabtree & Evelyn from https://www.ocado.com normally £6 for 15ml but currently included in a buy any 3 get cheapest free offer to 02/12/14. http://www.ocado.com/product/232337011

I'm looking for a really good black please to start with, doesn't have to be cheap. Ditto silver as the ChitChat silver glitter top coat from Poundland was difficult to remove.

    TIA xx

Sorry can't help with finding the polishes that you want, but the following link shows the easy and utterly fool proof way of removing glitter/textured nail polish and doesn't leave fingers stained from dark polishes either.

Is it specifically CND she's after because I know Boots have a good discount on some kits at the moment :)

Thanks. I'll ask, although on these matters I tend to just take instruction and open wallet.

I've tried a ton of blacks. For some reason it's difficult to find decent black polishes. The best I've had, by far, is Orly Liquid Vinyl. Available from Fragrance Direct for £2.99 which is an absolute bargain. I might buy a spare while they've got stock actually.

Are you looking for a silver glitter topcoat, or a solid silver polish?

Thank you maddiemay and starrystarry xx

I didn't know about the foil technique for glitter removal. In the last photo, her nail looked as yuck as mine did when I got the stuff off eventually. My mother always buys me Clarins stuff at Christmas and I slathered on Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream for some days before they looked reasonable again.

I'm thinking it's the glitter gunk.. so I bought different kinds of edible glitter and I'm going to try it on wet nail polish, see if it sticks/lasts and is less drying to my nails.

The silver I'd like is a solid silver rather than glitter, something shimmery maybe ??

The 'Jet Black' black I used to use was Mary Quant which is still big in Japan. I knew a Japanese pianist and she gave me some. Only needed one coat and was so hard-wearing I used to use it on the heels of scuffed shoes, to touch them up.

I Googled and found that there is now a Mary Quant shop in Chelsea, they do mail order over the phone, the polishes are 8.50 each, there are 36 colors but unfortunately don't do a black now :(

Adam Lambert, the singer, used to always wear OPI but switched to Chanel (no deal involved). So I figured, since he has access to make up artists it's prolly pretty good or why would he as millionaire, use it ?

Got Chanel Le Vernis 'Black Satin' nail polish today with 10% off at Selfridges :) so hopefully will have by Friday.

    Good

Leighton Denny 'Viva La Diva' (bright red) love this - got a free 12ml bottle with a magazine this summer. No idea where to buy them from though
Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Colour 'Silver Elements' £1, Poundland - one coat does it, subtle.

    So-So

Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Colour 'Red-y Response' - I'd call it aubergine. £1, Poundland
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure 'Pat On The Black'. Sainsbury's. More aubergine than black.
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure 'Right Said Red', Sainsbury's - bright red, sure they are better ones, not a patch on the Leighton Denny.

    Bad

ChitChat silver glitter top coat, £1, Poundland
George Gel Pro 'Jet Black', ASDA - can do in one coat if fidget with amount you load on brush. Not hard wearing.

I'm currently using an China Glaze silver for my xmasy nails. results vary, but i really need to get out a buffer thing or dremmel and smooth off the top of my nails as they're all ridged/dented from doors etc :D and now dyed a clear green from my last but one polish job. Good job i just paint over them, even acetone isn't removing it.

    I'd Melt For You £3.99 (http://www.nailpolishdirect.co.uk)

but they have a bunch of silvers.

I'm actually starting to prefer china glaze over a lot of opi's now. flat covers have better coverage, and lastability for me.

^used that site linked several times, good prices, no, great prices, and is a legit site. The absolute must for me is paypal-payments allowed.

My favourite silver is an Orly silver foil called Shine. It's not a glassy, shiny silver, it's more metallic and sparkly, but it's really pretty. You can also get away with not having perfectly smooth nails. The only downside is that it comes in such a tiny bottle for the price (£5ish). Luxe (a silvery-gold) and Rage (a coppery, silvery pink) are lovely too. I got mine in Boots but you can pick them up on ebay.

eta: I didn't realise that you could get bigger (18ml) bottles for about £10 - that's better value!

That just reminded me. I once picked up an Orly Gold a few years ago that was absolutely lovely to use and look at. Can't remember what name it was, but it was only a tiny bottle, and i got obsessed with it, so didn't last too long. I might look out for a silver bottle as I was really impressed with the gold, especially coverage wise.

Currently taping up for present nails. Lost my bows for them however, so waiting for some new stickers to quickly arrive for the full effect. Need to dig out my gold snowflakes for the proper xmas job :D

You can get full sized Orly polishes quite cheaply from the US via ebay, as long as you don't mind a bit of a wait. This thread reminded me too and now I've got a lot more nail polish on my wish list :)

Hello, my name is Jobo88 and I am addicted to painting my nails!

I love this thread! been reading through a little bit this afternoon, I thought I was quite bad for collecting polishes, but I haven't got many compared to some of the impressive collections on here! I've got a habit of coming home with new polishes every time I go to poundland, I always keep an eye out for sally hansen in there, and I love their 'jess' range of nail polish too, comes in lovely colours and the quality is really good for the price!

    today I'm wearing Serenity Now by H&M on my nails;

I don't wear it very often as it doesn't apply brilliantly, but I do love the colour!

I'm usually using a phone, so excuse my spelling please!
