I have a hydrangea bush that every spring and autumn i poisen with two huge packets of salt. The hydrangea bush was very nice, but the roots started lifting the path. MrJudi has in the past dug the roots up, as best he could and has taken everything that resembled a root from the bush but it keeps growing back. That is why i now pour salt over it and water it in. It keeps the roots down for 12 months. So i am sceptical, if kgs of salt wont kill the woody hydrangea bush, in theory it wont kill the trees. Since its close to the rhubarb bush, i think most chemicals are going to be out. Thats why i wanted to know about the copper thing.

Don't think there is a quick way of getting rid of roots. A copper nail will kill a tree, but it will take a while, so ringing it would be quicker (taking all the bark off in a ring around the trunk). I've had trees removed in the past and have had various options re the roots. One tree company came in and ground out the main part of the root ball with a machine - worked wonderfully. Haggle the price, esp. if offering cash :D

Next trees (different house) cut off near stump and had some sort of chemical painted on so haven't grown back and tree bases aren't a problem. Last year I had a grotty apple tree removed but as we were decking over it, cut it back, treated it and decked over it. Just one more grotty apple tree to go.

(Don't worry all you tree lovers, I have lots of other trees and will be replacing removed trees and plants with nicer ones)

Would you actually need to get rid of the roots though? ... how about cutting them far enough down to leave the stump as a seat?

LOL @ this quote. If i do that, it would make an uncomfortable seat, the trunk is only about 3" diameter.

You could always nail a round wooden block to it, and put some stools under it ;)

I cut down an apple tree in my garden a couple of years ago but I left the stump at about 5 feet high. My father in law built me a bird table to screw into the stump and it looks lovely :)
