  • This is a brill thread - thanks, Edwardia! I have lost 3 stone low carbing (Dukan) but I've stumbled upon this blog: http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2007/04/06/how-to-lose-20-lbs-of-fat-in-30-days-without-doing-any-exercise/

Tim Ferriss has now written a very thorough book which I can't recommend enough. He adds beans & legumes to his diet as well, so that's cost saving.

For the sceptics, many doctors in the US are nowrecommending low carbing for weight loss, not just for diabetics. I have never felt better & my blood work & blood pressure is now ideal due to this. Dr. Atkins got a very hard time, but research by Gary Taubes has started to open the science/nutritian world's eyes & they're starting to take note.

You're welcome Sparklyfairy and thanks for the recommendation. Personally I can't eat beans, legumes or grains but for people who can, not only do they save money, they make meals more interesting.

I so agree about Gary Taubes and rather than read his books which can be heavy going, I'd suggest to anyone interested, having a look on YouTube for a couple of lectures which he gives at universities. Also, if you Google What If It's Been A Big Fat Lie, you'll find Gary Taubes' original article for the New York Times, in 2002.

I was always coming up against healthcare professionals telling me to eat more carbs and I would tell them, if I had an allergy to nuts or strawberries, you wouldn't tell me to eat them, so why tell me to eat carbs.

Basically insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and diabetes whether Type 1, 1.5 or 2 - they are all, in essence, a failure to process carbs by either not making enough insulin and/or being resistant to it or not making any at all.

They would just look at me and it was like watching cogs whirring as they asked themselves yeah why am I telling a person who can't process carbs to eat them.

Excellent point. This would also explain pretty much the entire obesity epidemic..pushing low cal/low fat when it's making us all fat! Keep up the good work, btw.

My pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin to deal with a *normal* daily amount of carbs. If keep my carb ingestion very low, I don't need to produce as much insulin and need fewer drugs.

If an overweight person has a high level of insulin (fat regulating hormone) in their blood, cutting carbs on a limited time basis will cut the amount of insulin being produced and allow their body to burn the stored fat so they lose weight.

Both these reasons for low carbing have been proven now in medical studies.

Although we should all eat less sugar and fewer carbs as evidenced by the diabetes epidemic, I'm not advocating low carb as a one size fits all diet.

If you wish to discuss low carb v low fat please use one of the weight loss or health threads on other boards, thank you.
