No employer these days is allowed to ask about childcare and whether you have sorted it, but if you know about the practicalities and costs before you go to interview then you will be in a much stronger position, and feel more confident.
When I went back to work with my youngest I wasn't actually looking for a job, it was offered to me, and I took it because I realised that when I might be 'ready' to work then there might not be a job around for me! So I did things the wrong way round because of the circumstances - there was no help at all then with childcare costs - it is some time ago - and certainly the first few months were a nightmare until it all settled down.
It's hard enough being a single parent and juggling work without having additional pressure for childcare - I don't think the JobCentre will accept 'no childcare' as a reason for not accepting a job once the children are over a certain age, in which case you may find yourself in a huge mess.
I absolutely hear you on this & have had a few threads going about the lack of childcare available to me because of my personal circumstances.
I just wonder what will happen to those of us unlucky enough to just not have childcare, full stop. I have had the parent support worker try to help & even she has agreed that there just isn't anything out there that caters for my needs. I'm hoping a few more childminders start up....
I'm simply not happy to leave my DD 12 alone for hours at a time, day after day in the holidays (not so worried about the few hours after school). What would happen to me if something awful (fire etc) happened to her while I was at work? Surely I'd be negligent?
My ex has also stated he wouldn't be happy to think about her being left alone, & has discussed it with a solicitor friend who has said it could form grounds for him gaining full custody. Not that he'd go for this, but it does make me think.
These are all ifs & maybes & I'm hoping to survive for a few more years on CHB/CTC/ESA/DLA & go back to work when they are both older (unless that term time only job comes up & then I'll be delighted).
Sorry gone a bit OT here. To bring it back - I apply for maybe 1/week (but I am partially sighted, obviously don't drive & have childcare issues - otherwise I'd be applying for more). And I find that looking back at you gives a better view, a better view...0 -
When I was looking, at least 100 a week, through JCP etc online, in this day and age you cannot be picky and you need to send out as many as you can to get any type of reply so don't be picky when applying0

How on earth can you apply for 100 jobs in a week? I applied for seven this fortnight and even that was a struggle!0 -

When you apply online it doesn't take long, and I was picking anything I could do, not what I wanted. I did however get a lot of interviews where people were not. Passing them was another matter altogether0

I'm not being picky, I think when your applying for supermarkets your not being picky, there is nothing out there to apply for let alone being picky, With me not driving really !!!!!!s me up, I am restricted to a 10-15 mile radius max. I'll be lucky to apply for 100 jobs a year let alone a week.0 -
Im applying for on average about 5 a day. I have applied for jobs as far as Beirut, Germany and Spain. Spent quite a lot of time applying for jobs in London even though I'm based in Kent but my gut feeling is telling me its a waste of time as I think a lot of the jobs are fake/Agencies messing folk about.
Been to see a couple of employers who wanted me to hand in a CV and before they even looked at it started to tell me if I do not hear from them that means Im unsuccessful. I have a catering background with a lot of experience and formal training, but applying for anything at the moment. I pick up short IT technology contracts every now and then but its very quiet now.
I keep all my cover letters in a word document and just copy paste and edit for new jobs.0 -
Another week with no applications, its the height of total frustration, The local paper which once consisted of 3-4 pages of jobs now consists of a quarter of the page, and this weeks offering? Staff nurses, care assistants and a maternity leave job at the council, hardly bloody inspiring, and the job centre which would of once did a job search for you and suggest jobs to apply for when signing no longer even bothers to look at your book and just signs it, seems they have also lost hope, I think its just the frustration of it all that's the worst, I envy those applying for 5 jobs a day, I'd be lucky very lucky to get one a month that I could apply for. All the advise seems to be to make finding a job your new job, I mean how the hell do you do that?0

Most jobs are online now so there wont be many in the actual paper. I know someone who works for our local paper and they are not getting the money in that they were because its all online and people arent paying to advertise. Their revenue has dropped and also local paper sales etc have gone down because people are reading the news and the jobs online.
I remember when the jobcentre had the papers available for you to look for jobs while you were waiting. They dont have them anymore it may have been something to do with the cuts. I know on a previous Work Programme I was on people used to steal the papers, in the end they only had the jobpages on the table.:footie:0
